Haltech boost solinoid to a Tial wastegate????

I am plumbing my wastegates and have a question about the hookup to the boost solenoid. The instructions say to hook the normally open side of the solenoid to the top port of the wastegate (to hold it closed) and hook the normally closed side to the bottom port (to open it). The question i have is that when the solenoid energises there is no way for the top port to vent. The bottom port is pressurized and the top would be too (no way to vent the pressure). I e-mailed Haltech and they said it doesn't need a vent but on Tials website their vacuum diagram shows a vent in the system. Am i just over thinking this or should the control port be vented.

Thanks in advance.
Allen

For external wastegate-->

Port #1-----> Tee's into the hose from compressor housing to the bottom or side of the wastgate.
Port #2-----> Goes to the top of the wastegate.
Port #3-----> Not used/vent/air bleed or air intake before the turbo.

Went to look at it this morning and i think you got your port numbers off. This makes more sence.

Port 1 ---> Vent
Port 2 ---> Top of wastegate
Port 3 ---> Tee's into line to bottom.

Port 2 and 3 are normally connected. That would put pressure on both sides of the wastegate. Then when it is activared port 3 is shut off and ports 1 and 2 are connected venting pressure from the top of the gate. Is this correct.

Thanks
Allen

Well since it makes more 'sence' your way why bother asking especially when someone is giving you the instructions as to how it has been working for them on many applications with great success and no 'sence' was involved only actual trial and error or real world experience.
It's funny because a lot of boost controllers use the same solenoid for example 'Turbosmart' E-Boost controller. Probably you should have them re-write their instructions for the way it makes more sence!

Well everyone makes mistakes. I am sorry if i offended you but when it comes to things like that i would rather understand how and why it works. If there was only one way to do it then why do Tial, Haltech, and You all say to do it differently. Who am i supposed to believe.

This is the E-mail i got from Haltech.

Hello Allen,

Port 1 goes to the top of the Gate, Port 2 goes to "Boost pressure" ONLY, Port 3 goes to the bottom of the gate.

If there is anything else we can do please let me know,

Trust me, i value your opinion very much. I am looking at a $2000 pile of parts that i bought only because you said they work!

Ok, finally found a link that worked.
http://www.turbosmart.com.au/index.p...download&id=29

If i am reading this correctly ports 1 and 2 are normally connected. Pressure would pass trough the solenoid and hold the wastegate closed. When the solenoid is energised port 1 is shut off and ports 2 and 3 are connected relieving pressure from the top of the gate and opening it. Is that correct?

If it is then the solenoid i have is different unless they normally keep it energised and deenergize it to open the gate. That would make 'sense' that way if the valve/wiring failed it would revert to wastegate spring pressure. So if that is the case would you have to invert the output on the E11?

What came first? The chicken or the egg?

If you blow air into port 1 there should be no flow. Port 2 and 3 are connected once there is no power to the solenoid and also so that the top of the W/G can vent for normal operation ie. off the base pressure of the spring.. Once the solenoid is energised the pressure is allowed to flow from port 1 to port 2 while port 3 is closed in the process. It's pretty simple. Same operation as would most boost controllers for an external W/G both manual or electronic.

BTW.
Merry Christmas.

Yes once port #3 is facing you looking at the solenoid.

Merry Christmas to you too Cris. Thank you for taking the time to explain to me how the system works. It all makes sense to me now.

Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!!!!

This solenoid looks pretty interesting on paper. I like the high boost capability with low duty cycles. Supposedly you can also use it with the Greddy boost controller. Good to 120psi! Have to look into it.
