bad comm chip?

Hi All...
my project n/a to j-spec tII is almost complete!.....fired up the haltech for the first time(its a used but allegedly working e6k) and a funny thing happens....it powers up,starts to load settings, cuts off,and starts again, after doing this several times it stops and says i need newer software, but i'm running 6.34 that came with it,and haltech's latest version is 6.34,so WTF?...any suggestions?

Double check your fuses, serial cable connection, and and harness clip of the fuse block. Or you can send it to Haltech USA for $85, they can test ECU for connection errors for you, and send it back to you if nothing is wrong. But call Dave or Matt at Haltech USA, and they can help you out.

turns out it was because i was trying to run it under win xp (if you read this claudio,i'd appreciate an explanation of this virtual dos you mentioned) ,went through hell getting my laptop to boot to dos....had to find an external floppy,in the meantime i was able to load it up on a friends lappy and load up the maps and stuff, and voila...i now have a working t2 in my n/a sport! (yea!)

later however i found my engine wouldn't start and found the 10 amp fuse in the haltech block blown, after replacement the engine fired up again and works fine, but now when i try to connect either my computer(now running dos only) or my friends which worked previously....it just locks up when i select online mode
i guess i can assume that since the motor runs the haltech must work, but i am again afraid i have suffered the dreaded blown comm chip.I guess my question is what are the symptoms of a bad comm chip? or are these symptoms of some other human related failure perhaps?

Here is what i have on my P3 HP Pavilion laptop with WinXP, Microsofts's Virtual PC, which is a virtual drive with a simple DOS partition and all my dos software in there. Works every time, when i upgraded to XP a few years ago i almost pulled out all my hair tryiing to figure it out, till finally someone told me that XP didnt communicate with DOS software and that virtual PC worked so i tried it and never looked back.

Then just recently, some guys on the Haltech forum came up with something called DOSbox, but i found it to be too complicated and since my setup worked already it was fine by me. Also, my lappy has a serial port, but i dont have to retire it soon, so im shopping around for a good lappy to take its place.

You could also go the way that most people do to solve this, which is getting a craptop from ebay, something like a pentium2 machine with serial port and WinME or 98, and a floppy, which will always works, and if you ONLY use it for that wont give you any problems what so ever.

Well, i downloaded a trial version, and it works but not with its full range of features, but it works for me.

Does your lappy have a serial port, or are you using a USB to Serial adapter?

Your best bet is to have a laptop that runs Windows98 or previous, and you will not have any more issues.

Very similar with Serial/USB converters, some will not have any issues and will communicate, but others will not. If you are having issues with this, then the only recommendation I could make, would be to use Win98 or previous.
