Aim Dash Compatibility

I am looking at getting an Aim MXL Pista to go with my Haltech E11. I found the Aim MXL Pista in the US for $1799. However, they don't list the Haltech as a compatible ECU. I did find the Haltech Dash in Australia and it looks exactly like the Aim unit just with the name Haltech on the front of it - and about $500 added to the price tag. I spoke to the vendor of the Aim dash and they looked into it and said that if I bought the Aim dash I would have to get a firm ware upgrade from Haltech to use it.

So the question is can I just go ahead and get the Aim dash and expect Haltech to provide the firmware update for free? Or am I stuck paying the extra $500 for the Haltech dash? It seems like a bit of scam to me to be paying $500 extra for something that should work.

It's is fully compatible with the E-8/11 ecu's. I did one not to long ago and it performs perfectly. You will have to use the latest firmware for the ECU. Hook up involves piggy backing the Can low/high signals form the PC interface terminals.
The dash will read everything the Haltech is monitoring. Other than that if you want to datalog/monitor more you'll need the harness and sensors form an AIM/Haltech dealer.

When you say you need the latest firmware for the ECU you mean for the AIM Dash or the Haltech ECU? I was told that I would have to get the firmware from Haltech for the AIM dash which didn't make sense to me unless it was a way that Haltech control the sale of dashes that will work with their products. I would expect that AIM would be the only guys with updates for their dashes but I could be wrong.

Doesn't the dash have a wiring harness included for things like the odometer, etc? I would like to datalog the track that I run on to monitor my braking, g-forces and engine parameters. It sounds like this unit will do everything I just have to figure out how it works. To piggy back off the CAN low/high signals how do you do that?

Thanks for the response!

The Dash can be used both as a standalone dash and as a display for the E8/E11 series ECUs the comment that you need the latest firmware is for the Haltech ECUs since the CAN output isnt enabled on v1.62 and earlier. If you had an E6X/K or earlier you'd need to connect the dash directly to the sensors for it to work on its own.

The AIM dash and the haltech with 1.62 and later are CAN BUS enabled, the can datalinc protocol is standerdised by ISO 11898-1. In theory any device using CAN BUS should be usable with the haltech. This is just like your linksys router talking to your dell computer via ethernet.

edit: can bus is (or will be) used by OBD II (or future) so look for many new gauge displays designed for OBD that could be used with the haltech.

Anyone using CAN/OBD II display for newer Haltechs?

Although there is no OBDII compatibility with the Haltechs, both AIM and Racepak dashes are fully compatible with all Platinum ECUs, including the Sprints.

As i got info from haltech today, all newer Haltech ECU's use same AIM protocol over the CAN.
As long as we find OBD/CAN tool which either has AIM protocol capability, or could be programmed to it, then we should be able to use it.

Lately, there is plenty of products for new cellphones, PDA or PNA allowing on OBD II cars read all engine/car info from diagnostic plug and work like onboard datalog/gauge display.

Only one to claim compatibility with Haltech i know of is DashDAQ, but it should not take that much to get support in other products since everything is documented and available, even AIM protocol specs...
