Aluminum Gas Pedal
Hi Everyone,
I have always hated the plastic gas pedal and how it does not match the clutch or break pedal. Recently I have been working on replicating the clutch and break pedals, I figured I would post up my current progress to see what you guys thought of them, as well as if you had any ideas. I messaged GoodfellaFD3S before making this thread and he mentioned possibly making some wider pedals for heel and toe down shifting which I think is a great idea and I will make a prototype soon!
Anyways... here are the pictures of what ive been working on so far, hope you enjoy!
Originally I tried to 3d print a pedal, then use it as the pattern to cast a pedal from since the clutch and break are sand cast. Well my sand was much to rough and looked terrible, plus the sand picked up the line between the layers of plastic so that was a no go. I decided I would try machining one instead.
Here is the machined pedal fresh off the CNC before I sand blasted it.
I had some 'levers' waterjet cut.
Here is a comparison of the OEM pedal and the machined aluminum pedal.
And finally here is the pedal installed in the rx7.

Ill get that wide prototype made ASAP. I haven't driven the car as my engine is out for a rebuild but between the spring on the pedal and the spring on the throttle body I didn't notice a difference.

As mentioned, a wide pedal option and a dead pedal would also be well received.
Would also see the hole alignment revisited. Looks like you were messing around with it. More uniform vs more dots would be my recommendation.
I'd love to see some of the holes drilled out like stock, the enterprising owner could probably do that themselves OK.

I weighed the OEM and aluminum pedals this morning. OEM weighs 112g and the aluminum170g.

I can definitely drill the pedal to match as well as add the 'dish' inside the rings. It looks like a half-inch ball endmill matches the contour pretty well. I modeled a wide pedal with the drilled holes and dished rings last night.

I think a matching dead pedal would be great. Definitely a lot more work but ill have to start working on one!

Absolutely awesome. I think you'll have a home run with either.
As for dead pedal, a full on replacement would be ideal, but that'll probably require a brake to fold the metal into form. Don't dismiss just a cover like the OEM accessory was:
Might be a way to short cut the process a tad.

Perhaps take a little width out of the top? I would have *slight* concerns over brake/gas mistakes.
I think where you want the width is lower anyhow, added benefit is that it maintains some of the factory look:

Keep up the input! I agree that looks MUCH better. As I was modeling that pedal I thought " damn that looks like **** but I know everyone wants a wide pedal"
I will remodel this pedal and hopefully with everyones guidance we can figure this out!

This is my primary concern. I read a forum post that mazda made the pedal plastic and smooth to avoid this. Like I said I havent driven the car with it installed but playing "cruisin usa" in my garage this hasent been an issue. I would like to have a few people test them. Looks like I already have two volunteers in this thread

This is a good point! I DO have access to a break as well as a TIG welder so I could reproduce the whole dead pedal but it would be very time consuming/expensive. If a cover would be well recieved that would definitely be an option.
