hid retrofit interest?

Sorry to bring the thread back from the dead. To do what I did and add HID to our cars, I bought some aftermarket eBay headlights (with Halo rings) and a HID retrofit H4 kit(can't remember brand). They have to be the Hi/Low kit. I don't think the other kits will work anyways. The Hi/Low kits come with a shield for the bottom so the light reflects out the top. This seemed weird to me but it makes it so you don't blind other drivers. In Hi mode the lights suck back in the housing and reflect all the way around the housing to light everything.

If I drop some money(a lot that is) on headlights it will probably be LEDs.
The new version looks a whole lot nicer than the originals.

This place was making its like you described, looks like they only have just the bulbs left on clearance and are not make HID kits anymore.

wow, you guys took this to a whole new level. All I did was buy some clear lenses off ebay for $20 and then ordered the H4 Hi/Low HID kit from ddmtuning.com and installed the whole thing. Whole Project cost: $70. The nice part is that the HID kit comes with its own harness so it does not work off the factory stock. It all goes through a relay and its own fuse.

Links to products I used are:
HID Kit
And
7" Round Headlight from eBay
On the 7" Rounds, Pick your poison. I picked ones with Halo rings only to find out that unless the headlights are fully on no one can ever see them. Oh well.

I have added pics to my garage because that seemed like the easiest way to do it. You can get the idea of the HID project that I did from the pics. Maybe some year I will custom fiberglass some new buckets to fit a separated Hi beam and a Low Projector.

^^^^Please don't go this route. Every one of those H4 housings with the exception of E-Codes have a terrible beam patterns with no dicernable cut off. It will blind other drivers and make your distance vision worse. The proper method is a true projector retrofit.
The LED replacements are nice but still aren't up to HID standards. 1350 lumens is barely more than most halogen bulbs. Hell my H9s put out 2100 lumens. OEM HIDs put out 3200 lumens. DDM and every other Chinese rebased garbage HIDs usually run between 1700-2500 lumens on a good day.

The cost effective route would be whatever cheap eBay housings you like and this: Bi-xenon Morimoto Mini Stage III Kit (D2S) - Complete Retrofit Kits from The Retrofit Source Inc
If you want it to be even higher quality with better output start using OEM components like Matsushita or Denso ballasts and Osram CBI bulbs.

I used Beamtech LEDs and Hella 7" replacement glass in my 83. 7Aull, here on the forum, recommended them. I had a small hiccup with the LED's (loose wire) but repaired that easily and they are super nice. White with no blue cast and the beam pattern is perfect for approaching cars. With the Hela's ou can use any H4 bulb though.
The only thing that "annoys" me is the halogen sealed beams are convex like eyeballs while the Hella glass is flat faced. Not a big deal but noteworthy.
The Hella's come with a halogen bulb and you can definitely just use that, although I did not try them. The LEDs just swap right in.
I measured the LED current draw at only 1.6 Amps at 12 V = ~18 W (low or high, per side) compared to 55W/65W for halogen low/high...much brighter and ~30% of the halogen power usage.
Installing is very straight-forward, note that the apparently huge looking gap in the red bound is exactly correct. The side profile of the replacement is much thinner with a wider standoff. Hellas on the right, sealed halogen on left.
This photo is rubbish to show beam pattern, but it gives you a sense of the change in color and brightness.
