Lightened rear trailing arms?

Lightened rear trailing arms?

Some time ago I came across someone lightening rear trailing arms on FC by drilling large holes in it. I think it might have been J.T.P who modified them like that. Can you guys explain what is the benefit of that and doesn't it compromise strength of trailing arms in case of contact?

Interesting.... I'm curious if this would introduce additional flex, or if the reduced weight is noticeable.
