www.15years.ca

have you thought about getting an FD or FC from japan?

do you know about the laws regarding vehicle importation, and how they could change in the next year or so?

if you are interested or perhaps would be interested in aquring a JDM vehicle in the future you should join up at www.15years.ca to help out in the fight for whats right

TC, ICBC, and other gov't and private companies are trying to get our laws changed to not allow vehicles into our country from abroad...

Currently our laws allow us to import used vehicles 15yrs or older without having to conform to federal regulations, they do still have to meet certain provincial requirements though...

the gov't and other mentioned groups want to change tjhis law to 25yrs saying that the vehicles being brough into Canada are not safe for our roads(but vehicles 25yrs and older are?)

so far our group has managed to stop the laws from changing, but we can always use more help in numbers and in spreading awareness...

recently ICBC released a paper saying that JDM RHD vehicles are 40% more likely to be in a collision... you may have heard about this it was in numerous papers across the country... after reviewing the hard data under the FOIP(freedom of information program) we found that RHD JDM vehicles are 10-15% more likely to file a claim when compared to 15yr old domestics of the same class...

no where in there data does it say which vheicles were invovled in crashes, it only states claims... what does this mean?

well i know of one persons vehicle that was used 3 times in this study, once for a cracked windsheild, and two others from parking lot dings from a shoping cart and a door opening into his car...

they, ICBC, also used a few vehicles that are illegal due to age, they were younger than 15yrs in one case the vehicle was in Canada 5yrs too early...

if this sounds like something you want to find mroe about please join up, the site is non-commercial and just information related, we dont have a for sale section and we dont allow advertising... it is an OWNERS group, and potential owners group..

there is a ton of info on the site and i hope to see you there

I'm not sure about the month because it was manufactured and listed as a '92 so it wasn't really an issue for me. Yeah I love r32's too, but it became such a common imported car in my area that I decided to go with something a little more rare or uncommon =R .Plus I think it's just such a beautiful car haha.

P.S.

I didn't have enough posts so I couldn't PM you

im sure you are familiar with our 15yr rule for importing vehicles, so that you should know that it wont be eligible until the month and year are at least 15yrs old...

and speaking of our 15yr rule have you checked out

www.15years.ca ? its a forum created by a group of like minded people to keep the 15yr rule in place and possbile lower the age limit, but mostly to prevent the g'ov't from changing the law to 25yrs or older...

i myself have a 90 GTR32 Skyline... i thought about getting a FD but decided to get something with a lil more punch

I dont know anything about the importation laws etc but I do know what I see in our shop when some of these cars have come in for service. I dont know what these people paid for the 3 cars I have seen so far, but they are complete heaps! The one in the shop now has a crack in the rear fender (where the bondo is actually cracking from stress!) , the roof looks like it had a concrete slab dragged across it and it doesnt run worth a s__t! I know the person must have just picked it up because it has a transit sticker on it. Additionally half of the wiring etc doesnt match our Canadian shop manuals! I sure hope these cars are dirt cheap and not what a Canadian or US car would cost!

Its funny because some people pay extortionate amounts of money for a same condition car they could simply buy here for half the price. Of course, with proper paitence and shopping ability, you can find very nice examples.

But like I always say. Parts arn't expensive. Its the labour that kills you. This coming from a Land Rover owner.

Very true, but I think a person who doesn't comparison shop and buy smart will get taken whether they buy here or from outside the country. Combined with the fact that many coming in are auction vehicles, it's reasonable to assume they're going to be like auctions here; a lot of crap and a few rare finds.

My jdm vert was not an auction vehicle. It was imported by a resident of Japan, who also lives here. And to get a full re-amemiya bodykit, wide fenders front and back and so on, it was a deal for me. So changing the import laws for people like me who do shop smart and are car connoisseurs, rather than young and immature kids looking for what they think are cheap fast cars to race on the streets with, is a real shame.

I just really dislike legislation that blankets the innocent majority along with the guilty minority. If the root of the problem is street racing, they should target that, not cars from outside the country. A fool can kill just as fast with a sunfire as with a Skyline. Oh well.

they should change the rule to 5yrs or newer. then we would have newer safer cars being brought over, sure they would be alot more expensive, but it would eliminate the junk and u could get some killer rides before they were miled out and beat down.

Changing the rule wont change the fact that people will still bring over junk.

Take for example an AE86. I see JDM versions everywhere. That car is over 20 years old.

But for shopping smart:

I was ready to send $17,000 to bring over a 1993 Land Rover Discovery 200TDi from England (Left HD for those who want to know). About $7000 of that price was shipping and fee's. The truck was rust free, but hugely high milage. The advantage to this, is it had options not availiable here, mainly diesel and 5-speed.

I've since spent the same money on a local 2002 Land Rover Discovery with 1/4 the milage. I weighed the want over the need. In the end I felt I made a more practical choice.

As for my skyline gts-t awhile back, I feel that the condition of the car, for the price I paid in total was about right. Nothing really more to say about it other than you can get a nice gauge when you see the beautiful examples that come over, compared with the garbage.

Maybe they are more likely to file a claim, becuase they are worth more, rarer, and the owners obviously value the car if they went through the trouble of importing it.

u misunderstood me i think. the car has to be 5yrs old or newer. if its 6 yrs old it can no longer be brought over due to its age.
a car that age on average would not b junk. if it is u know damn well it was abused.
think about it u can get a 2002 spirit-r . i would have to think it is a way better fd then the s6 that was available here. then 5yrs down the road no more come over preserving its rareness. better hurry only 2 days left to grab an 02fd.
i'd be jumping on the jdm bandwagon if that was the case

I get you now lol. I missed that. Problem is, what happens with the 'old' cars here?

I say abolish it alltogether. Let us drive what we want so long as it achieve's a set of basic safety rules and equipment.

I for one don’t like the fact that what once was a rare car to own is becoming more common and the examples that I have seen being imported are usually in bad shape. One of the main reasons I bought an FD was because I didn’t want a car that was common. The fact that they can be had for pennies on the dollar compared to LHD ones also opens the door for those who may give them a bad name to own them.

This may be a selfish way of thinking but it’s just how I feel.

No offense to anyone, but theres more places to import motor cars from than just Japan. Point of fact, I personally know more people with European transports than JDM cars. Although, I see 10 times more JDM cars when Im out and about.

I know how u feel....
i dont mind a jdm fd if it is well taken care of.
thats why the 5 yr rule would elimate the beat downs u c all the time.
but its never gonna happen anyway.

i dont see how having sub-standard quality vehicles would lower the value of your vehicle if its in good shape...

sure there are bad examples all over the place of imported vehicles, but remember they are 15yrs or older, compare them to domestics and they are still nicer...

also the people that are foolish and end up with a near junker import wont have it for long as they wont be able to afford the maintenence, and repairs...

i spent over 6months searching for my GTR, and during that time i was also looking at FD's, if an nice FD came across before the GTR did i would prolly be rockin the rotary... ive loved rotaries since i was 6-8yrs old and my grandparents had old school mazda rotary stationwagons...

the law hasnt changed yet and we have a good fight going to prevent it but we can always use more people...

i agree with abolishing it all together and allowing us to import what ever vehicle we so choose, as long as they meet or exceed saftey regulations, for the time period they were made in... as obviously a 70/80/90's car wont be as safe as a new car... but things like the frame being good, brakes, tires, suspension etc etc etc...

but they cant just enforce that kind of saftey regulation upon just used imports they should also enforce it on domestics... as there are many vehicles 10, 15 even 25yrs old driving on our roads that have not been inspected since they left the factory... hell my old car an 87rustang(rip) was runnin on the oem stock original suyspenion...

and while there is a problem with street racing, the street racers are usually out racing in moms honda or dads chevy... the people with high power sport cars dont street race nearly as often as the wanna bes do... most people who have imports havent bought them for street racing, they have bought them for both there uniquness, and bang for buck...
