300hp sounds low, and will likely be very low come 2017. While the rx7 was built off the rotary I'd rather an electric car like the Tesla Roadster. Put an electric motor in the rx7 lol

I wonder if they'll try their upmarket branding again: Ẽfini for the new RX-7. Enough people seem to like their logo, myself included.
Times have changed since 1992-1995. The Japanese Yen was 125¥:$1 CDN in 1992 and now it is about 80¥:$1 CDN. Who knows what it will be in 2017 and whether Mazda will be in better or worse condition than they are now? I am optimistic about the SkyActiv program and their new vehicle styling (e.g., 2013 Mazda 6 – let's get a Mazdaspeed, too).
The FD3S was priced in the mid-$40,000s and up at the time it was launched. I'm guessing a new RX-7 would be around the same price or slightly above the 370Z or it would be nearly unsellable, regardless of its superior performance. I can't see people paying GT-R prices for a rotary-engined car without massive power to back it up. The Corvette ZR-1 (or the Cadillac CTS-V) is likewise a relatively slow seller for GM, but at least it has a multi-tiered product platform to sell against. 12 Cadillac XLR convertibles were sold in 2011, for example.
Funny Mazda6 footnote from Wikipedia: "On March 3, 2011, around 50,000 Mazda6 vehicles from the 2009–10 model years were recalled in the United States, with another 15,000 in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico after it was found that Yellow Sac Spiders were found building nests in the fuel line of the vehicles. The Mazda6 has two pipes coming from its gas tank, an extremely rare configuration. The amount of gasoline vapor in the fuel line is just strong enough to draw the spider in but not strong enough to kill it."

Yes.
The base model Nissan 370Z starts at $40,978 in Canada and $33,120 in the US.
Subaru WRX: $32,495 Canada; $25,795 US
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution: $41,998 Canada; $34,695 US
Scion FR-S $25,990 in Canada; $24,995 US
Hyundai Genesis Coupe: $26,499 Canada; $24,250 US
Porsche Boxster: $56,500 Canada; $49,500 US
Lotus Elise: $64,990 Canada; $47,250 US
Chevrolet Camaro: $27,965 Canada; $23,345 US
Chevrolet Corvette: $60,050 Canada; $49,600 US
Ford Mustang: $23,999 Canada; $22,200 US
Chrysler Challenger: $26,995 Canada; $25,495 US
... etc. for hardtop base models. US–Canadian price differentials are big enough to drive a Hummer through.
If Mazda is aiming at a higher price, they'd better bring the "go" along with the show.
By the way, I had no idea the Challenger was priced so cheaply now. It's probably not selling that well, V6 or V8.

You guys have really been sucked into the whole power craze, huh?
Their new miata is going to try to hit 2200lbs when it finally comes out.
If they can manage to hit 2700-2800lbs like the FD, 300hp is going to go a long way.
People always forget about the weight of these vehicles. All those mentioned in the list weigh above 3200lbs. Some significantly more than that.
Hell, even the new 911 is weighing in at 3200lbs and has grown substantially. 3200lbs with 400hp is just enough power to mask the weight it's throwing around.
I think 300hp with the same weight, if not less, than the FD is going to be monster!

Mazda Might Bring Back The RX7 Sometime, Eventually, Maybe
If Mazda had only made the RX7 and Miata over the company’s entire lifetime, they would be revered as one of the greatest automakers of all time. Of course, we haven’t been able to buy an RX7 in America since the late 1990s. It’s sad.
But now, the company is saying that the car will be back for 2017. Or are they?
We’ve heard this a million times before. “The RX7 will be back in a few years time.” Mazda mentions it once then it disappears from the news.
This time, Mazda stated the car will be back in 2017, five years away. And people inside Mazda even said it was happening!
But it’s been said that a new RX7 would be here in 2011, which never happened, arrive in 2012, which didn’t happen, and 2013, which ain’t happenin.
So yeah, we doubt we’re actually getting one. Look out for a story in a year that pegs a new RX7 to be arriving in 2019.

And the Lotus Elise's listed curb weight is 1,984 lbs.
I think the critical factor in curbing weight here is materials science. Mazda has done just about everything possible with steel – you can see from the current weight of the MX-5 (2,500 lbs.) is about 400 lbs. more than they started at with the first-generation Miata (2,100 lbs.). The creeping advance of convenience, comfort, and safety equipment loaded down the Jinba Ittai concept (人馬一体 – Rider, Horse, One Body) although engine power increased slightly over time.
The FD3S is about 2,800 lbs. and only slightly less in some of the exotic Japanese R and RZ configurations. Steel body, aluminum hood and driveshaft... you can see that the limit, even with carbon fiber everything and Lexan windows would be about 2,400 lbs., stripped.
High-end supercar manufacturers (and purist, boutique shops like Lotus) are going with aluminum bodies or carbon fiber shells. I'm not sure how much it would cost to set up an aluminum-body platform from scratch, but it is almost certainly expensive. You could save some money by sharing processes with the rest of the car lineup – using aluminum bodies across the board would be consistent with SkyActiv's overall mission, for example.
Mazda and other manufacturers have used aluminum parts for suspension components (RX-8), etc. as well. However, aluminum is not as strong as steel and you can see that some aluminum-bodied cars (Aston Martin, for example) are still quite heavy overall, despite their light frames.

I think the general plan they have for this platform is a good one. You have to also keep in mind that they are building this car for the general public as well as rotary enthusiasts like us. A crazy 400 or 500hp car isn't something that a regular person off the street is going to jump into and drive off the lot. It would be too intimidating. They also have to make it meet emissions and have it last beyond the warranty time. If they can keep the weight down a 300hp NA engine will be plenty! Keep in mind too that this will be the 16X which should actually have some of that thing they call torque! My Rx-4 is only around 200hp and it's scary enough to drive because it's light as hell! If they were ever going to bring a new rotary out, the 50th anniversary of the original rotary is the time to do it. I hope it does come out just to shut the non believers up!

I will defintely take a look at the car when it finally starts to hit "test mule" status. I know there have been mules kicking around with experimental engines and chassis's. But nothing concrete yet. Just gotta wait and see.
This is afterall a company that is running solo for a little bit.
Gotta wait to see how their joint venture with Alfa is going to pay off. I think this will be a test of things to come. If the Miata/Alfa equivalent sell like hot cakes, then they'll probably introduce something a little bit spicier like the next generation RX-7.
Just gotta wait and see. It will happen. This is afterall Mazda. They can't be Mazda without a flaship sports car using a rotary engine. Just wouldn't be the same.

Go Hard....or Go Home
The reality is you cant make a modern crash standards approved vehicle using steel that will weigh under 2700+lbs. Unless you start to get into what are still exotic/expensive material like Carbon Fiber and Aluminum for chassis etc the 2200lbs weight number wont be easily achieved unless the car is $50K plus. So assuming that the car is low priced and weighs about 2800+ lbs, it will need to make 280+ HP just to be remotely competitive in the market. This has alway been the problem since the 2nd gen RX7 and the RX8 (third gen excluded!), not enough power or torque for typical street driving and a price far too high in the marketplace.

If it will cost more than a 370 then I expect more performance. While the weight of the vehicle plays a part in that so does power, and 300 doesn't get me excited.
Will 300 be enough? Who knows but if it does come with low end torque then that goes a long way in making the vehicle feel a bit more powerful.
2,3 or 18 rotor I don't car. Get it right that's all that matters when you are spending that much $$

Reallly? why are people complaining about 300 hp not being enough? the essence of rotary was never to be fastest in a straight line, but instead be a good handling car. 300 in my mind is already amazing especially being na from a rotary. When fd's came out, it was in the same situation. Its other competitors destroyed it in a 1/4 mile, but in the end it came down to overall balance of the car, which won people over. Its gonna be a great car, and im looking forward to seeing its production in 2017!!!

It needs a small turbo to bring it to 350-450 bhp or its going to fail like the RX-8 did. Sure, they can have their n/a with 300 bhp but their needs to be a turbo model to get people excited. The n/a will just be another winter beater for me like the rx-8 was and then get bored within a year. Good handling can only take you so far. The FRS/BRZ had hype because it was an 86 revival, a new RX-7 needs to get people excited or "its just another bad on gas, unreliable rotary".

I dont think there'd be a person out there complaining about power if they came out with a n/a 24x 3 rotor engine. but a guy can only dream hahahaha
300hp would be the highest hp numbers for any rx7 model, if its a lightweight solid foundation with amazing handling that's all that should really matter build it how you want. I do agree there should be a n/a and turbo model to help keep the sales up.
people are expecting a drive off the lot super fast car, but dont want to pay the $$. 500hp supercars probably wouldn't sell half as good as a 300+hp high end sports car. and in the end they're trying to make some money.

The new 2014 Jaguar F-TYPE looks like a contender. 495 PS and 0-60 in 4.2 seconds is pretty decent – curb weights have not been mentioned yet.

I personally will not worry about the hype, have they promised a return a few times yes, have they not met those goals yes, but to think that it will never happen (well call me crazy but I'm a believer) and they have their hands full with a new line of engines to keep the company profitable. I hope they do make it happen someday. With that said I think some of us need to stop complaining about rumored prices and accept that it will prob be an expensive car and bite the bullet and support a company who is moving in their own direction and working hard to make exiting cars while others are joust making an electric hybrid to get their numbers right and even their fuel numbers across the line, me I'm going to work on getting some pennies set aside and my credit right so I can buy one of these if they ever do come to market even if it has 200 BHP half the fun is adding aftermarket goodies and making a sleeper out of your car that no one expects last I checked most RE fans I know, myself included love this cars because we like to be different... for now I will keep tinkering with my old ones and dreaming of a day when I can drive a New one of the lot.

im pretty sure a new rotary powered car will come out. if they say it will be a new rx7 ,its either that or an rx9
Mazda Canada was telling me they're working on the new skyactive rotary
mazda's pretty sneaky with their new cars they dont like to show them till they're ready.I think the Shinari is a stretched version of the new RX car to see how people like the front. but we'll see
Even Jay Leno was telling me He's a Big Fan of the Rotary engine.
I got connections lmao!!!!
I put my youtube video as a video response to his and jay lenos garage commented on my video hahaha had to sneak that in somewhere
