SK Need help (engine) in Saskatoon Area

I have moved to Saskatoon and bought another FC again (red 88 T2 with S5 swap) from Calgary, the car was flooded when i first contacted the owner because he parked it for awhile. It was unflooded and installed a new tps as well but it wasn't adjusted properly. The idle was abit high even after it was warmed up and before the engine was warm'd to full i can't rev it pass 4000rpm, according to the shop in Calgary its because the tps hasn't been adjusted yet, and we had a problem closing up the hood properly because the hitch, but we had it tie down and secured before i start driving back. And also the previous owner had the boost adjusted to lowest possible until i drive it back and adjust the tps and replace the boost gauge.

i had to do a 500km+ drive back to Saskatoon, I was driving 100 in 5th without reving over 3000rpm keeping the turbo off, everything was fine execpt for the high idle and i rev'd the engine up abit on couple hill climbs when it was warmed up (only to 4000-4500) and the car was running fine (even underboosted). But when I was 2 hours away from Saskatoon i ran into heavy rain, after driving in the rain for like 10 minutes my engine just shuts off and it won't start again, won't even crank, and i noticed most of stuff lost the power (power window, power sunroof, all interior lights, even the turbo timer).

I got the car towed back to the city, and this morning i dried everything up and hooked up a booster. I try to start it up again, but it still won't crank, replaced a couple fuse then the engine starts to crank again and i got all the power back, but it still won't start. Tried to unflood it again thinking it might got flooded when the engine stalled by itself. Checked the battery, starter, and took out the spark plugs made sure everything was cleaned up and dried, nothing works. It will just keep on cranking until it dies but it won't start.

Here comes my main problem... it seems like theres no rotory shop in Saskatoon or atleast i couldn't find any. But i been seeing a couple FC on the road everyday especially a white NA S4 with metal door handle and S5 tail-lights (almost everyday) and a couple FD as well. So i am wondering if anyone in the city and give me some help or give me some names for shops?

From what i knew/seen there were some stuff done to the engine by the 2 previous owner.
- the whole car has been stripped down rewired completely
- rewired FD fuel pump
- Jdm S5 engine + tranny rebuilded (50k)
- boost controller (manual)
- fuel cut defeat (had it unplugged)
- larger injector (couldn't tell whats the cc, and the previous owner didn't told me either)
- 3" pipe without cat
- bov
- turbo timer
- fuel cut off switch

theres some other stuff was done at the intake maniflow as well but i couldn't tell what it is...

I dosen't want to mod the car with "GO FAST" parts, just want it back up running with as less engine mods as possible. The reason i bought it because of the great body condition for a good price and not too far distance.... and the last but not the less.... i still love the FC after gave up 2 of them before.

Sorry for the long post but i am really running out of idea, unlike Toronto where i can get it fixed up easily by just going couple blocks down the street.

what fuses did you replace might help in diagnosing the problem;

Now do the following;

take a spair spark plug, remove a leading spark plug lead and hold the end neat one of the nuts on your strut towers from the strut. Get a freind to crank the engine. if it sparks then spark is not your problem.

Then there is a check connector for the Fuel pump bridge this connector and turn the ignition key to the on position if you hear the fuel pump running then it is not the fuel pump

Now the next thing to check is the grounds for the ECU ( check them all do a search several articles for this)

If this does not work... i am going back to SK this weekend fire me a pm before 1:00pm tomorrow and I might be able to help you out while I am there.

Thanks for the info jreynish, tried everything you suggested in the pm but either i didn't checked them properly or is just something else. It got spark, fuel pump, starter are all working, checked the ground, replaced new plugs, and the ecu is getting abit complicated for me. I just pass by one of the shop near by tonight and realized they had a FD parked there all the time and lucky i ran into one of the guy who work there, gonna move the car over tomorrow and let them handle it.

But something suprised me, i actually tried to chase 2 of the FC i seen in town in the last few days and asked them if they know any shop will work on the rotory, and both of them said they don't know......

there is not a shop in saskatoon that is worth you time... unless they have a flat rate for repair.
There is no rotary specialists in saskatchewan at all! That is why i learned myself when i lived in sk cause that was the only option left.

As far as your problem, have you done a compression check?
If not try one. Also if you have spark and fuel and compression then your problem is proabably a improperly stabbed CAS (crank angle sensor).

I will never take my car to a shop in Saskatoon, an FD and I am learning as I go. So far replaced turbos and clutch, sooner or later will do an engine swap and rebuild if i have the time. I took my car to a shop for exhaust work, asked for 3" piping throughout and suitable for twin turbos with high flow. I ended up with a stock mx6 exhaust bent slightly, its 2.25" maybe 2.5" with bends, so some points are 1.5" lots of welding spatter and mig wire left from screw ups... I could have and should have done better myself!, none the less not impressed 600 dollars later.....sigh. not impressed and lesson learned. Get to know some people in s'toon and become friends with them, this is a great community and most are more then welcome to help. I would love to be of assistance but I am still in the learning stage on my FD, no exp on other gens. Goodluck!

I still haven't got the time to move the car to speedtech yet... after all these comments i should have a second through... but i doesn't have the time and skill to do it myself either.... damn guess the car will just sit there for the summer...

and as for compression test, i don't have the tester for rotory engine but i seen couple friends of mine tested a rotory engine with the pistol engine compression tester and it worked, anyone know how to do that?

yes you can use a normal compression tester the trick is to remove the check valve on the bottom of the tester so that the air can excape the tester.

This way you can watch the bounces (each rotor face compression) to see what the compression is like...

Unlike a piston engine where it counts the highest compression over a cycle. A rotary engine needs to view each face independantly so that you have an accurate idea for each face of the rotor. that is why you have to keep track of the bounces.

Do a search for rotary compression tester how to.. and I am sure there is a writeup on it.

haha yep its on the road i just had one minor hickup in dealing with an oil hose

oh btw to all canadian FD owners you may want to order sparkplugs in bulk from the states i just ordered 16 sets, as mazda in canada has upped their price to over $100 per set or $26 each....

Rotary Performance AKA RX7.COM still has them listed at $9.95 each. but that will change soon.

Do a wet and dry comp test per jreynish instructions and then use some oil to help with deflooding. If you have spark, and decent compression she'll go. If flooding washed away all the lubricant she won't...

tried everything suggested, again might just me having lack of experience/skill with this. And no i haven't tow it to speedtech yet (thank god). The car is still sitting in a shop at 51 (an empty shop next to Marco). I will go look for the guy on faithful, never had the chance to grab another guy to test the compression with me. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the info, you guys are lifesaver

btw cp1 i got lucky and got the last set from the dealer for $20, the guy told me it was the last set whomever gonna buy the next set will have to paid $100 lucky me.

Are you going out Travis? I may make an appearance if I get off work (doubting it) shucks! just waxed and polished the hell outta my car.... 7 hours! and I havn't even gotten to the inside! Realized new rims and a paint job would be nice, so many small defects when close up scrubbing! Let me know how it goes if you make an appearance and I can't.

P.S. Not in any hurry or any desire at the moment but what ever happened with those turbos, and did you get the part made you needed?
