Etest 20 year rule - ontario

so as of jan 1, 2010, my fc becomes 20 years old. I am wondering if ontario still has the law where cars older than 20 years do not need to do an etest.

The way that it works now has changed...It is no longer a 20 year old rule. It is simply any car upto and including 1987 is exempt. So in 40 years from now, your 1989 vechicle will still need an e-test.

They froze the sliding scale at 1988. Anything 1988 and newer will always require an e-test. Sorry bud

Drive clean is a huge cash grab for the government.
I wish someone would abolish the whole thing. There's no need to have it.
Stupid Government people!

It's actually pretty good science - air pollution in urban areas like Southern Ontario is a real problem, and by far older cars are the biggest contributors - newer cars are LEV or even ULEV compliant when new, so they can actually leave the exhaust cleaner than the air they take in (not counting CO2 as a pollutant, of course). One older car, even in good (and stock!) mechanical condition, may have 100x higher emissions of CO, NOx, and so on, so it makes sense to target those older cars to at least make them remain compliant with the emissions regs in effect when the car was new. Hence the cash-for-clunkers programs too - getting older cars off the streets costs a lot less and gives bigger returns in terms of cleaner air than tightening the regs tighter on new cars.

It's just a fact that as 7 enthusiasts, if we want to continue to enjoy our aging rides, we're going to have to do what is necessary to meet emissions (pony up for new, high performance cats, tune moderately, etc.), or our cars will be off to the crushers. Says the guy who runs no cat, because Alberta has no inspections or testing. At some point we will, and I'll end up replacing my RB pre-silencer with a cat again, hopefully one that will be no more restrictive. Us NA guys can't afford to give up horsepower

Easiest way to avoid e-testing: Sell FC, buy FB. One of the first things I did was ditch the emissions equipment and exhaust. No cats, no stupid hoses, no air pump. The car will never have to see an emissions sniffer, and I get to save $32.50 (or is it $35.20....?) every two years.

Its 36.75 man. But your car must stink to high heaven lol. My FC stinks so bad with no cat on it I'm puttin one on. I will agree Drive Clean is a giant money grab, but it does get rid of the shitboxes that make you nauseous in traffic.
I know it costed my employers like 400 bucks to get me certified.

there are still some emissions exempt areas in Ontario.
go to www.drive-clean.ca to find out.
I know guys have been registering their FC's with their Cottage's address, because the Cottage is in an Emissions Exempt area!
(but ya didn't hear that from me!)

i was wondering about this. i knew that after 87, it would still need an emission test regularly. but what if was to buy a 87 turboII so its exempt from emissions, but put a 90 TII engine?

i know its a hassle and what not but im just thinking from straight from an emissions test point of view...

granted, i dont know alot about rx7s. been trying to learn what i can tho. its just from what ive read. emissions give alot of owners a hard time.

I would like to see them e-test a plane. Can't see how they are emissions excempt. One plane taking off produces more pollution that I will ever emit from my rx7 or any of my cars....

Though cars 1987 and older do not need to be e-tested, they still need to have all the emissions control equipment that was originally installed by the manufacturer. Smog police can hand out fines to older vehicles, such as FBs, for not having cats or for any other tampering of emissions control systems.

There aren't many smog cops, but they are around. I've had the pleasure of meeting a couple, unfortunately the encounter cost me 365$ for one infraction.

its all nonsense. a man with an 87 can drive e tets free, but my 89 can’t? The day will come when we set the standards and not have them dictated to us by our Employee.

an 87 with any engine should be fine, as it wont need to be tested. though to be 100% legal, the car must have all original emissions systems intact, no matter the engine year/type.
