and weirdly California is the same way, they inspect every part of the emissions system, AND the tailpipe emissions, but that is all they do. we do have laws about the condition of the lights and windows and other things that would be on an inspection, but instead of actually having an inspection, its at the discretion of the individual police officers.
we apparently cannot have an inspection, because if the brake lights work during the inspection, but failed after the car turned into traffic, its the inspection shops fault...
so our system is stupid too

Did an attemp to mount the engine and gearbox....the gearbox is to high, the engine wont sit behind steering rack at the hight and angle i desire and i dont want to **** up the geometry of the suspention....sooooo the firewall will be modified and the transmission tunnel aswell. The package would probably fit in the position the banzai mounts puts it but that is to far forward and to high for my taste, it also ***** up the swaybar. Pictures will come on a cut up car!

The engine and gearbox is in the car!
This required major cutting and remakeing of the chassis so i actually got help with this part of the build, The firewall is cut and moved about 3-4 inches where teh engine sits and the transmission tunnel is cut all the way to the backseat and is now alot bigger to make room for the hughe *** bmw gearbox and a 3,5" downpipe.
This is just initial building pics from the company doing the job, enginemounts looks great and the new gearbox crossmember is welded in the frame-rails to make is stiffer, the 20b now sits 0.5 inch further back then the 13b does stock (measured from front cover to steering rack) and sits so low that there is only 0,25" of clearence from the oilpan to the aero belly. The weight distribution is still 50/50 and the GC has dropped a little, steering rack is still in stock position and so are the swaybar. This way it is alot easier to tune the suspention than to start moveing things around. Shifter position will be 0,5" from stock and the entire firewall modification will hide behind the dash
I also got everything i need to finish the oil and watercooling, i wont be useing thermostats at all, and i will go electric waterpump

started to fabricate an v-mount radiator/intercooler, i know its semi bad since it increased airflow under the car vs a frontmount setup with a shroud pointing up thru the bonnet but i will have to compromise to keep everything as cool as possible.
i will cut and weld new inlets on the radiator when the mounting brackets are done

v-mount and such
Started to make a "bash bar" that will act as protection for the rad and oilcoolers and also as a mount for the splitter and toe hook, i considered alu but ended up with mild steele since i had some in the garageand its easy to fix and modify....this is just the start and i will add bars that extend past the oil coolers, the rad mounts are finished and the radiator is at mad performance getting the outlets moved a little. Now its splitter fabbing time!

we always run bumpers in the race cars. we're doing wheel to wheel, the bumpers get used, quite a bit, and better safe than sorry

almost done with the new firewall and gearbox tunnel, shifter needs to come forward about 2 inches but its really easy with the bmw shifter assembly. Now i am gonna modify my dash to fit this bigass box of steele, all in the name of bulletproof gearbox and 3.5" downpipe :-)

I love your build and everything your doing and may even incorporate some of your ideas into my build.
However, there comes a time in a build like ours where you must admit to yourself that you were off in your calculations.
I just went through this myself and decided that my engine was too tall and that I needed to lower my sub-frame for better hood clearance.
That being said, I think its time to go back to the drawing board for your transmission.
There has to be a better fitting option that will hold your power level.

thanks for your input, i dont see the problem you are seeing thou, this is a time-attack race car not a street car, i will still get the stock dash to fit i just have to cut a few inches of the bottom of the stereo/ac part. there is plenty of room for the driver and hell even a passager is possible. yes its a big modification but compared to the rest its not that big, and now i got a bulletproof gearbox and the mass of the car is actually more centered then stock. i dont even think you will notice it once the cage and dash is in, atm im replacing the frame rails with something a little more beefy and rust free, after that ill fit the dash and we will see

your build looks so freaking mean! do you have a build-thread? is that the ronin fenders and if so how was the fitment when paured with the fc2000 front end?

First frame rail completed, a bit more sturdy then stock. this solution will outlast the car....and i will probably tie it to the cage.
The welds look wierd in the pic but they are"ok"....not very beautiful but strong as hell. I had a hard time welding upside down with minimal space and the stock chassis seems to be prepped with something that makes the weld sputter a little before it burns of.

big update with pics coming soon, but for now i can say this much:
-Done replacing frame rails(floorsupports or whatever ppl call em)
-Entire underside of the car is now clean from rust, paint and so on and small mods dine to the floor for the cage, seat, pedal assembly and belts
-got partially sponsored with a turbo...EFR 8380, yep its a 9180 turbine and 8374 comp wheel since im restricted in my racing class. Will try both 1.45 and 1.05 turbine housings.
-Car will be caged within weeks

Big progress...
sorry for not updating here very often, allthou this 2nd gen forum seems kind of dead :-O
well the build continues and here are some of the progress:
The cage and interior is now painted
Bumpsteer correctors and supernow tie rod ends
Custom made some oil-cooler ducting that will make the air going thru the oil-coolers exit the front fenders/front bumper instead of going under the car or to the weel wells (think porsche style)
Here is a picture on the external oil system and extra cooling system....its not finished in this pic but you get the picture, everything will be in hardlines, hell even the vacuum system will be all hardlines with AN-fittings
Modified the front fenders alittle to improve the aero a little and also the looks of them, they are being modified as we speak once again but now at the area after the wheelwell where teh fender meets the door...think more ventilation
Wheels have arrived!! Cosmis racing (made in the usa) 18x11 with 285/30-18 rubber.......well 3 arrived...the 4th was damaged on its way here so there will be 2 more weeks before i can fit them on the car...
Now in almost finished with the haltech harness (need a tps connector and a BAC connector), the car will get a new windscreen in 2 weeks and a turbo and manifold in 3, during the time i will make a new very basic electrical system for lights and so on and spray the car satin matte black.
IT WILL BE FINISHED VERY SOON :-) mohaha

this is 1 of the most recent pics i have, and alot has happend since this, but notice the oil system is finished apart from 1 hardline htat awaits a 90degree swivel fitting and 1 more oilfilter (it was out of stock)
, the 6x smartcoils are also mounted and wired up :-), the sharp eye will notice that the wiring loom aint sealed yet, its because its not finished and tested yet ;-)

I went with em simply because they are alot better....i tested both ls coils, stock and aem coils on my prev build, i will never go back....unless i spend like 5k on some super mega cdi setup

Its "drop in" , however the person who did my gearbox made the inputshaft 1,5mm longer by welding the bellhousing that way, so i had to get it machined but it was a minor adjustment.

Wow, that is awesome, those boxes are STRONG and pretty much available here.. But the shifter is still in the wrong place if the engine is not moved towards firewall?
