The turbo gRoadster 7

Boredom is forcing my hand at starting a build thread for this red FB.

I've got a few S5 turbo engines laying around and a pair of factory S5 turbos. So I figure what the hell I'll play this turbo game everybody else is doing.

Here's the car. I'm never gonna wash the finish, but I'm planning on keeping my polished X wheels CLEAN.

^^^ both headlights work properly... PO is a ricer.

And I'm using my hella bling out wheels on this whip.

Here is the S5 engine that came with the car.... PO said it was a runner, but I don't trust the PO and I don't trust rotary engines.... SOOOO rebuild time

Here are the housings I've got. They are purty. No flaking or chrome chipping whatsoever. The rotors I've got that came out of this engine are dynomite, but I want to crack open the engine that came with the car first before going into assymbly mode.

And I polished the crap out of the stuffs going under the hood

Not only is this gonna be my first turbo cager.... Its also my first car WITH A/C!!! I'm so excited.

What are your plans for an ECU or are you planning to use a carburetor and hat?

Gonna use a Edelbrock 1405 or 1406. Then put the marine floats and accelerator pump in it.... seal it... rising rate regulator Yada yada yada.

Oh and I forgot to mention. I've got an SE rear end in the deal for the car as well. That'll help keep power in check.

EDIT: since I'm on to the particulars that I forget to mention. I am locking my distributer. Not so much by choice, but more because one of the advancer diaphram's on my spare dizzy has a tear. Rather than fix the distributer I'll just give the locked one a shot first.... then fix it.

On of my big questions is can I use the Racing Beat four barrel intake manifold with a factory S5 turbo?

I'm unsure on my welding skills to make my own, but lack of money might force my hand.

So I got to taking the turbo II motor apart.... yeah LOCKED UP!!!!

I broke a ratchet trying to remove the front pulley. Gonna have to snag my impact gun from work tomorrow.

I think the dude I bought this from was right about it being a freesherish rebuilt engine. Look at that pickup tube and oil pan... barely used. Also, those housings obiosly have come from different engines and haven't been together for long. Still... the engine is locked up.

Looks nice! I used an impact wrench to take off both the front and rear nuts, just pumped up the air pressure to 120 to get there. Hope there isn't any real damage from being locked up and that it's something simple like something under the front cover maybe? It'd be nice to not have to crack that open and be able to use it for years to come.

OK... This front bolt is kicking my tool's asses.

Broke my 3/8s cheapo Husky ratchet. (kinda expected that one)
The 3/8s breaker just free'd the engine up. (cool cause it has compression and all 6 apex seals still in it)
My MatCo 1/2" impact gun with 150psi behind it didn't work.

OMG... engine 3 me 0 ... grrr ##@($#

ITS TORCH TYME!!!!!

Planned on rebuilding it anyways.

I don't trust rotary engines.... But I love them.

Go to your nearest tool store, I guess Harbour Freight or something along those lines, and pick up a 3/4" breaker bar with the appropriate socket .

Thanks for the tip.

Na, that problem is just me being lazy/pre-occupied. I need to drag it back to work and put the flywheel on it. Imobilize the flywheel and hit it with the impact again. and possibly heat it up.

Love this build!! Great idea using the stock filter cover to hide the plenum. Where did you get the plenum BTW? and what size turbo are you using?

Yeah, I haven't seen anybody use the stock carb hat on their builds. I think it keeps the car retroish.

I just pulled it from a 3.9 V6 Durango or a Dakota. I can't remeber which.

I'm using the factory S5 turbo unmodified.

So my buddy convinced me to just give a try cleaning up the paint. "hey man it might look good under the dirt"... Ah **** he was right. This thing has more shine than a dime under the grime.

Not bad for 30 YO Mazda paint!

Nice to see someone trying a blowthrough turbo build instead of a TII swap. I know it's harder and riskier to run boost on a carb as opposed to EFI, but everyone does the EFI route, which ups the COOL factor of a blowthrough setup
I'm also looking into this (or supercharging) for my ride. Will be keeping a close eye on your build Q.

Supercharging is cool. I might take that route on my gold 7. Just cause I want to make a true duel exhaust for that car.

Originally I wanted to do a supercharged setup, but turbo is cheaper and more readally availible and rotary engines have SUCH a powerful exhaust. Turbo makes sense for the poor man.

Big updates require titles.

So... Long story short I had to rebuild the engine, but its in the car now.

Another change/update... I'm going side draft.

and I washed it so it doesn't look like its been sitting under a tree un-touched for 5 years.

Oh and I have 2 hoods for this car. I was just board and had some extra white paint. Thats not permanent hood graphics.

Engine bay pics. Wiring is about 95% complete. Just the A/C and the alternator.

Um... Update, but no pics. The freeshly built engine has 1700 miles and its almost time to do a last oil change and boost on it.

I've re-evaluated my carb choice once again. I'm sticking with the Nikki.

I've been making an adaptor plate to mate the 12A Nikki manifold to the 13B ports. It looks like I might not have to do too much to make the turbo clear the manifold.

12A nikki manifold... Cutting and removing unnessary bits. I'm still working on my adaptor plate to mount this to the S5 engine.

I like your manifold mod. Similar to the ones I did, but didn't end up cutting into the water jacket. Any plans on how to block it off?

How far along are you on the boost prepped Nikki? Figured I'd ask this question as well.

I have some freeze plugs in the S5 block, and the adaptor plate I'm building won't have coolent holes. I didn't have the option of running coolent through the RB holley manifold I'm currently running so thats why I've got the freeze plugs.

Furthermore, aparently the two housings I ended up using are both rear S5 housings. Both of them have coolent ports for the intake. Interesting that they work together. One day I might have an FC (morbid curiosity) and I'll really know how these Tii engines are supossed to work.

The Nikki... I've got everything in order; just waiting to complete the adaptor plate.

I guess I should elaborate on the "adaptor plate". I've got a 4"X12" peice of 1/4" plate steel. I figure I can mate the nikki 12A mani to the 13B. I'll tap the adaptor for some M8 bolts to secure the 12A mani to the adaptor. The 13B side will just get bolt holes drilled through it to secure the plate to the engine.

I guess a picture would be worth 1000 words here. I'll get around to it.

As for the 12A manifold I'm thinking of really cleaning up the way the bottom of it looks, but part of me wants to keep it all hack job sharp and nasty looking. I dunno I guess it isn't done now. Wait and see

Rediculausly slow day at work today so I was able to do some grinding.

It clears the S5 turbo
I'll still have to give the turbo a 1/4" of extra clearence because of the adaptor plate I have to use to make the nikki manifold work. But its capable of clearing

Now its just a matter of saving up some dough to buy the nessary fuel delivery and ratio monitering devices.
