85 GSL-SE - 13b turbo build for this winter
So I joined many years ago as I had purchased an 85GSL-SE for $400 running with a bad 2nd gear... took delivery and decided to test out the gear issue in the parking lot of the business I then owned... Meineke in Shakopee... well 2nd went boom for sure and the next day a buddy and I tore out the motor...
It was an ex cali car (has original sales sticker in glovebox),so in the time I walked to the office and back out my buddy had the exhaust off the car with hand tools... it was a good start... It had minimal body issues aka some small scratches and a dent in the corner...
Well it never went much past there as my wife and I had just invested into building the shop which including buying land and building the shop, outfitting it and trying to start paying it off...
shoot forward roughly 9yrs, 4 kids, selling the business, going back to school and changing professions later, I stumble across supposedly a 13b-rew deal.. (upon purchasing it, it may not be but should do the job).. it came out of an FD... came with radiator, trans, haltech, intercooler etc etc....
I am hoping to undertake this build with a buddy over winter... there will be some small mods for fitment but I work as a CNC Machinist at the UofM and have access to many pieces of equipment to make whatever I will need... I also have a lift, mig & TiG welder in my home workshop so... Ill be ok.. its the wiring that worries me (I hate electrical) but another buddy (same one mentioned above) will help and he has a sick FD already...
so some pictures... will add soon as Ive tried 3 times and then it says I was logged out... frustrating site

awesome to know u kept the $400 fb from 9 years ago! the body still in good shape or has it started rusting (didn't mention whether it was stored inside/outside/etc). subscribing to see how ur REW swap goes.
FYI, the turbo actuator will hit the front cross member (if using stock twins). you can either go non-sequential like me, go single turbo, or notch out the cross member for fitment.

so pictures finally worked in original post.. so here are some more
as far as the engine it is a single turbo borg warner.. came out of a running car... pics of it on the trailer after picking it up
also added a pic of the shop I work in (kinda) cant really find newer pics.. currently am off work due to meniscus surgery so will add fresh pics of the shop when I return... I added a picture of the new waterjet we got 6mths ago
I have access to welders, benders, shears, saws, mills manual and cnc, lathes manual and cnc, waterjet, laser welder, laser printer/cutter... name it I think we have it... so I think I should be able to manufacture/design whatever I need for mounts etc...
I also work with solidworks... our shop is a research shop so many times we take a hand drawn design from a student and design it in solid works then build it from scratch.. I attached a picture of a chamber that I was responsible for from start to finish... had to redesign for professor, design in solidworks, figure out fitments etc, then make it all... even had parts 3d printed for it...
I attached a couple of shots of my home shop... which I have a torch, lift, TiG, exhaust bender, MiG etc etc... should be covered there too... and a buddies fd that is helping and a 3000gt that we did a custom exhaust on
I just hope there is not too many things I have to replace on the car itself due to sitting... first goal is to get it running and tuned... then drive it... as it progresses from there I hope to upgrade suspension and stuff.. wheels etc... would love to add rear seats to take the kids along...
I need a new headlining to due damn mice eating thru... which they only did above the visors... strange... other than that the interior is mint... well mint for a 31 yr old car...
So to answer a question you asked above.. the vehicle was in a shed in a landfill (owned by brother inlaw) for the last 7yrs or so.. they had planned on tearing down the old building so I had to move it out... so I loaded it up and brought it home where it currently sits in one of the mother inlaws sheds.. we love out in the country so she had a couple of medium farm sheds... so yes since buying this car the only time it has been outside is when I put it on the trailer and drove it to the landfill shed or bought it home and put it in the shed... it needs a deep cleaning inside and out for sure...

originally from Australia so I had a couple of rotories back then... but it has been 20+ yrs..
My white RX3 sedan which I painted red for $300..
I had another RX3 sedan that I never got built - frame issues
My 12a Turbo RX7 (my friend built it) and I bought it from him
and a buddies 808 coupe built to RX3 spec..
I also had a 1300 wagon (same model as R100) but piston motor that I never got around to doing a rotor swap...

So spent yesterday (sat) and a few hours today (sun) stripping out the interior.. as mentioned earlier I had a little mice issue with the roof lining and found a nest under rear storage area.. lots of mouse poop and bones...
it stinks.. but not as bad as it did..
thanks to mostly my 11yr old daughter who was nagging for me to get out there and start working on it again, we got a lot down.. everything is bagged and marked..
Stripped out the sunroof seals and they are luck brand new.. soft, no tears... happy happy happy..
some recent pics... dragged her over from storage, power washed her, put her in the shop and started stripping, daughter enjoys driving the gravely so we can drag the 7 in and out.. the rears are dragging from sitting so long.. may be seized but it rolls which mean fixable right.. ahha My son sat in it and looked at me smiling "I can see why you like this thing.. its sweet.." Dont be too excited buddy.. your sister may get it before you seeing as she is helping me more

so I guess I cant be patient and just kept going.. My daughter is pumped because of all her help she gets first ride in it with Dad...
Got the engine in place kinda.. have to move it forward about 2inches and the stick will line up with factory hole.. then I just have to figure out mounts, engine and trans to get it all set in.. not bad for about 2.5hrs work with an 11yr old girl and recovery from knee surgery

No real progress today..
decided to try to deign a transmission mount, and will have my Brother inlaw cut and bend it out of .25 steel this week...
I have a waterjet at work but no material and dont go back till monday.. and our brake wont bend that..
He on the other hand is the owner of a company that makes industrial mixing machines...
found some pics of one of the projects we did back in school for cnc degree... had to make interlocking blocks... I used a rotor design and the 2 lock together... then other sides have a bunch of other engravings...

after spending half a day with a buddy looking at a few ways to go about it I have decided it is better to listen to others who have a lot more experience and have done the swaps.. yes there is always new ways to do it.. but I figure (to my wifes displeasure) that I am going to spend the cash and get a few needed parts and use my labor that way.. so it should end up close to a factory like setup..
I had my bother inlaw make up a trans mount for me (pictures in post above are of design) but when I designed it with tig wire and cardboard I really wasnt sure how high to have the trans sitting... so the part wasnt quite right.. so I chopped it and will section it to the right size once the other parts are delivered and installed..
pulling the motor out again tomorrow to separate the trans and motor, the will do the cover/pan swap, connect trans and put back in for mounting and fitment.. once it is in.. and set, I can pull it again to strip/clean and paint the engine bay before putting it back in AGAIN.... hahaha at least my 11yr old girl loves helping.. maybe her 3 other siblings will throw in some more too..
while doing this I have to finish up my 10yr old boys crf50 build... before it snows... haha

Once you get the engine/trans in for a test fit, install the driveshaft if you have one, to ensure it does not hit anything after putting all four wheels on the ground.
I had this issue when converting my 1985 from auto to manual. I made a trans mount that didn't work so well so I'm in the process of tig welding the manual trans mounts on to my auto body.

Im looking.. maybe I misread it... so now I need a S5 T2 CAS??
Does it plop straight into the cover?? is there any more hidden little ***** and pcs Im going to have to buy... Im almost at the point where I am going to mill and weld my own mounts to the 13brew cover and run it how it is...

yes, S4 or S5 CAS, not sure if there is a difference (forgot which one I got myself but it does drop right in).
the following comes to mind when using the 12A front cover:
you will need to have a oil drain welded to it...like mine
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-t...s800/photo.JPG
if you are using the REW waterpump, then use your existing REW hub and pulleys but if changing over to the FC waterpump, then you'll need to source that engine's hub and pulley set.
the OMP you'll need is from a 12A as well unless you block that off and just run pre-mix.
i used the rx8 front cover metal gasket.
oh, and last thing that i can think of...make sure to have your engine facing up when changing covers so front needle bearing (or thrust bearing) doesn't drop.
