My method is basically: Wire brush off the large bits of rust, blow with compressed air, spray with rust converter, then paint once the converter is dried. Or just replace the part with one that isn't rusty :]

Nice work so far. Just purchased my first FD roller which had been sitting outside and is infested by tiny *** spiders and who knows what else. I also had to clear two wasp nests and a decent sized fire ant nest out of my of new garage. Good luck with the build.
