DIY single turbo

My second wrecked fd. Don't need any online smacks to the face, I gave my self alot of physical ones in Pearson. I didn't want to go single at least for a while when I got more money, but when i replaced the airbags and the srs sensors, radiator, AC compressor and minor suspension parts, I realized that my secondary Turbo blew. I did not allow my self to consider replacing the twins with twins, you know money... and complexity for a DIY type of guy like me. And the other reasons that us single conversion guys love to go that route. Well I'm going to thread out my I tire rebuild and repair plan on here. These pictures go back to early 2011. And I have been ongoing and spending all of my extra navy money on a well balanced reliablility-budget buying build. This is my second fd, second single conversion and first time doing everything for myself. So has it been a learning experience? Yes! Was it hard? Not at all because of this "GREAT" forum and Google searches that mostly pointed right back to it! Only thing.... Trust, Faith, And patience! I don't think anyone that really wants to know about there fd and are going single to cough up more money to someone else to do it for them when they have all the info available to them. But, if there are special cases that have tons of kids and tons of business, it's totally understandable. Tons of money????? No! No excuse for you buddy because that money could be more power and smiles from people like me.

This radiator and its fans are very effective. When the fans kick in, temps drop period!

Infamous rats nest (central vaccum)! FPR is the only thin you need out of the color code solinoids unless you are running an EBC(electronic boost controller). Assuming you are using a power fc which allows and ignors the fact that you have discontinued the use of these solinoids and there deleted counter parts( the emission control mechanisms that were attached to the twins, rats nest, and UIM).

Installing the ecu was not difficult at all it doesn't fit perfectly, bit close enough. And at the same time you should consider the few wires that need to be dismembered. To make this untamed engine bay it's new brain, if not, ot will act a little skitso.

Okay I bought the 1600's from rx7store.net. along with there resistors and I was planning on going 850 1600. Like the OG's use to. Then I saw that people were pushing the power i was looking for withstock 550 primaries and 13-1600 secondary. After I had already shaved my primary fuel rail to fit 850's. So with this new idea of 550 primary and 1300 secondaries meeting my goal of 350-400 while earning a better gass pocket I bought another set of 850s to supply a temporary setup. I have no doubt it will work, because I ran a bigger T62-1 with that setup. Just until I get the data log it and 1300s.

I modified my stock oil drain fitting to fit the return flange from my gt35. The oil line I purchased from eBay. Removing the altenator makes it all easier. And the oil filler neck as well.

Turbo and manifold dropped in, my particuler wastegate with this manifold does not want to drop in from up top unless you knock a dent into the fire wall. I chose to just go under and put it on from there, still was a direct bolt on. This whole engine mod required no cut nor weld. At all.

These coolant line related parts on the left of my compressor housing had to be unscrewed and repositioned just to clear the from heat. I'm goin 9s for my spark plugs. Upgrade the wires as well.
A grounding kit wouldn't hurt. An upgraded fuel pump is paramount. I'm going with the aeromotive stealth 340phl. I got a tune from rx7store.net for my set up. I'm premixing now.
And either just an under drive two piece pull kit like I have or a full after market, colored or light weight or whatever it takes for you to be able to remove the air pump.

Thanks she's on her way to San Antonio right now so I can't finish right now. Bout to get a catch can ,oil cooler kit. And maybe the feed wide fender sets. But I have started it up three times, just trials to work out whatever kinks. I'll keep posting . I'm at the point of, " I need this I need that". And I have the money... what should I do?

What ever happened to your build? Did the Ebay parts last?

My Apologies!

I arrived in San Antonio Texas shortly after posting this. I recived a message from someone saying it was a nice post but not well enough to be a sticky... I didnt know what that meant. School had started and i was not making the money i made while in the Navy. So the build came to a hault and I bought a Miata. I moved back to SC after a few years leaving the car in Texas.

The last i worked on the car i swapped the cx racing gt35 turbo for another turbonetics t62-1. I boosted 13 pounds on the cx racing fine... It didnt feel like the t62 nor sound as heavenly. But the wastegate worked well for the 5 miles i put on it. I decided to just focus on my income and have joined the navy again...

I have been going thru a lot of planning also so that when i gwt back to this build, i dont cut any corners. While attending St. Philips College I earned my degree in automotive technology, I honestly found out back then "in 2012" that i in fact had a lot to learn.

Whats the current plan? :
-Return to origional fan units used in the FD's SE'S
-get fresh injectors
-the t62 is oil cooled only and i have to find a way to route the turbo coolant lines back to the water pump with no kinks. *any tips?
-everything from manifold to turbo to wastegate will be port matched.
-i also want the xs power lim *this can wait
-a bunch of other fail safe goodies
-for example. I want to get the legit hks diaphram for the wastegate.

Other new purchases:
-Bought the rest of the exhaust *cheap stuff until we ballin again lol
-VMS fuel pressure regulator *will try it out
-Glow-shift Boost gauge installed*fun *donated it to my friend Chris and his mustang build
-all injectors need serviced. * I have bought a lot lol
*550's 850's 1300's
-Fuhita Engineering "feed" 850cc primary fuel rail *yup
-cant really think of anything else.
-Mandrel Bending solutions CF "looking" coupling hosing to ic.
-newer greddy style bov. I havent heard it yet tho, may have to tweek it or swap it with the one purchased previously.

For now ill post some pics of the progress that i have on my phone. Im in San Diego right now for A-school and when i return to SC ill dig up the rest of what i have. The miata has been digging in my pockets big time since 2012. She has also taught me a lot...

Did it all work? Yes it did but i dont have enough drive time to boast about it.
