What do you think about this 7?

What is your opinion about the car? I'm thinking of buying it
Go or Don't Go?

Here is a basic rundown on the car.

93 RX-7 touring. 5 speed, Silver/black leather interior. 98,200 miles. Engine and clutch were replaced at around 59,500 miles. I have replaced the oil every 2,000-2500 miles since. One time it did make close to 3000 miles before I replaced it. I bought the car with 9200 or so miles on it and don't think it has ever been wrecked. (I haven't wrecked it, the guy I bought it from said it had never been wrecked, and it has a clean Carfax report.)

Condition:
The exterior paint is well above average for a 93 except the clear coat on the doors is chipping off, it has a small dent on the drivers side back fender and the normal kind of parking lot dings and chips on the hood you would find on a 1993 car. The car has been parked in a garage at home and at work so the interior is in excellent condition. It has the original Bose sound system in it with a CD player but the amplifier in the passenger door is bad. It has an oil leak around the turbos but the Mazda dealer told me the turbos are fine. The dealer wanted $800 to fix the leak ($110-$120 in parts from the Mazda dealer with the rest labor) so I thought I would try to sell the car without the leak fixed in case someone wanted to save the money and fix it themselves or or put on some aftermarket turbos. I replaced the pre-cat with a pipe at the time the engine was replaced and still have the original pre-cat you can have with the car. Replacing the pre-cat is supposed to keep the turbos cooler. That is the only mod I have done to the car because I did not want to mess with the original ECU. Everything else on the car works (AC,heat, lights, sunroof, etc). Tires have about 50% left on front 40% on back. I am going to sell it for $10,000 with the oil leak (I have a Mazda service manual that goes with the car), $10,900 if you want me to have it fixed. I think this is a great price for this car and don't like to play games when I buy or sell a car. If it would make you feel better as far as talking me down on the price you can add $1000 to the above numbers

Thank you
Phantom

I think this is about market price...not a steal, not a rip off. If thats what you are looking to spend than it sounds like a decent price. I personally would probably look to spend about 2k-3k more and get a car with 20-30k less miles. If I was going to get this one I would also fix the leak myself

Sounds good to me. I had an oil leak that needed to be fixed when I bought my RX-7. The estimation was around $1,200 and it turned out to be about $1,700 to fix. I had a Rear Main Seal leak and an Oil Pan Gasket leak. So be prepared to pay more.

I say go for it!

Thanks, I'm really scared about the engine. I think the car is beautiful, but the engine is what really makes the car, and I can't make anything out of the engine. Sure I could identify the usual things, but overall I was confused. I would love to get to know this car more than just reading on it, but if it something goes wrong too soon it can be very very bad.

I think it's an OK buy, however definately check the car out in person if that is an option.

About the leak, you're probably looking at a rebuild on the turbo's if it is bad enough. Taking advice from a Mazda dealership with anything on this car is a no go. Don't listen to them they're idiots. Chances are, if they do "fix" the turbo's and have them rebuilt and whatnot, they won't get the sequential system set back up right.

If you have fair mechanical knowledge and are willing to get under the hood and turn some wrenches I'd go for it and try to learn as much as you can. You will have to do some of the reliability stuff to it. I am probably telling you stuff you already know.

Sounds like a good car, however I would check the boost on the car and get a compression test done...then you'll see if it's worth it.

I got mine for $10,500 with 87k miles and it had very nice interior and totally stock untouched engine bay. I got to 91k and the coolant seals went. I don't mind doing the engine R&R because I like learning about the car and whatnot, so it wasn't that bad.

damn!!! OBLIQUE you need to find someone new to do your work man..thats expensive for just an oil pan seal and rear main...before i knew anything about my car...i paid 1800 for rear main fix, oil pan seal, omp seal, banjo fittings, oil filter pedastal, and then i had a custom belly pan made to vent air into the radiator, had the FMIC remounted to properly close the hood, had my ignitors removed from on top of the engine and had a custom bracket made to mount the igniters next to my battery....then new plugs, wires, and block off plates....man i got a deal.....

Same thing for me..I had rear main seal and oil pan and even a few other minor things done like the first week I got the car. I had a mazda dealership do it (obvious no no) but that was before I knew anything about the situation. Entire job was just over a grand, so that 1700 was a rip.

Sounds like a good deal on the car. I would check the oil leak in person too if you can. I kinda had an oil leak start a little after I got my FD and well ended up having to get a new motor and turbos.

See..that's EXACTLY what I'm scared about. Having to chunk about 4k more into the FD for things that should of already been in the car. I don't mind putting the reliability mods on it, but I don't want to have to go throught an engine and turbos. I've gone through that with a Mr2, and I didn't like it. I Know I better get ready for it sometime in the Rx7, but the car is sooooooo beautiful. whew

Phantom,

I was in your same predicament when I got my car. I knew nothing about the car and was scared to get under there and mess something up.

My advice is this: 1) buy the car - it will give you more joy than you can handle, 2) dont be afraid to get under the hood. There are a lot of how-to's on this car, and most of them are excellent. 3) pay the money, get the thing fixed by a trusted shop near you, then start reading on this forum until you can't learn any more. When you get up enough courage, grab the tools and hit the garage!

If I can do it, you can. I know this b/c I am a moron.

Steve

Thank you RevSteve. Do you think it's a good buy? I love the rotary engine. It's soooo unique, but I looked under the hood and was like "uhm..there's the alternator, the intake, the air filter, etc, what the hell am I looking for??". I'm going to go through the check list that's provided on this site through a link. Hopefully this car turns out well. I do not want to join the ranks of the many Blown rotary guys. I know I might have to, but i can't take that risk for a couple of months. (Gonna drive like a grandma)

Where are you buying this car from, it sounds like my old seven. Is it forsale in Texas? I am almost sure this is my old 7. Thats the exact milage when I replaced the motor and that would be about where it is now. Even had the same problems.

lol..

I even gave the guy the precat when he bought the car. Not sure why he wanted it. Sure would be funny if this was my old car. If so, its got its problems but nothing bigtime. Unless hes fucked it up.

Whew..I drove the rx7 today..and WOW.. This car is awesome.. The oil leak is major. After pushing it hard there was "steam" like smoke from the oil....Said it might be the oil gaskets... I check a lot on the car. Everything is in decent shape for an 11 year old. There are paint chips on the hood. The clear coat is comming off on the drives side. The interior is pretty much flawless. I bet after being waxed and cleaned the car would look really nice. It needs a touch up on the outside. If i get the car deff. going to get that oil thing fixed. I'm taking friends who know a lot about the car to check it out one last time before I make a decision. Whew..I see why people are Rotary Nuts! I think I am too!

"Steam like smoke coming from the oil" Huh? How/where did you see that?

Oh and keep in mind that eventually you may need to replace turbos or the motor. Not to scare you off but just trying to remind you that the turbos/motors on these cars often do not have a long life if they aren't properly maintained and you said you don't want to go through that after your MR2. This is an enthusiast's car and if you can't handle an occasional expense like that then this car isn't for you.

NO no no..Totally misunderstood. I don't want to have problems RIGHT after I buy the car. I don't mind problems down the road. I Understand..I've used the search button.. I'm not afraid to use it. Plus using 600 dollars for reliability mods and not beating the hell out of it like people do their 7s will help tons. I plan on autox and a little bit of drag, but I want the actual "owning the car" feeling to sink in and let my income recover a little bit. I was able to identify more parts today too after searching through the site. Lil by lil

oh dur sorry. He ran the car hard, and when he popped the hood all this "steam/smoke" came out of it. Smells like oil. I'm guessing dripping oil that it touching hot parts of the engine..makign it "steam" up
