Thumbs down Well crap.....I think it blew.....

Just barely got my car home just now.....sigh.
Due to the shitty *** weather we've had, it has been like WEEKS since I took it out. Things have finally cleared off and dried up enough to venture out.
So I buzzed around town for a while, warmed it up good and then headed out of town. Ran fine, took it up to 80 or so, turned around and headed back to town and punched it and it hit really hard for a few seconds, got up to about 100 or so and....it just started missing and puking and had NO power. It died at the first stop sign I came to, took about half an hour to get it started, it acted like it was flooded. But once it started it ran fairly good until I'd put it in gear, and then it tried to die.
I ended up having to rev the **** out of it and shift in and out of gear just to get home, and it died in my drive.
Hasn't started since....dammit.

It is kind of ironic, my son had a dentist appointment yesterday and they are thinking he might have to have braces. I quipped with the dentist (who has a new M3, by the way) that, "No, that money was for my new streetported engine!" and we just laughed.
HA!
I'm not laughing now......

You seem knowledgable enough about these cars, but check the map sensor anyway but the brake booster.

I was noticing your mods. How many miles did the engine have and did you not have a boost controller?

No ecu?

I hate to say it, but after looking at the weather sites for Wichita it looks like it would have been around 10C outside during your little romp. The stock ecu air temp correction factors are off by a lot in that area - stock temp correction is 5.5%, and mine are set to add almost 10% extra fuel. This is pretty well documented on the ecu forums.

Definitely check your MAP sensor, but you need a programmable with logging and wide band .... and a streetport :-)

Check all your vacuum lines .... maybe something just popped off.

I just got it into the garage....man, it is TERMINAL....
It finally started again, running so so, but would die when put into gear. Once I got it in the garage, I let it idle, holding the throttle by hand and listening. The whole upper intake was rattling, the engine just sounded like ****. It was making a noise that sounds JUST like a rod knocking on a piston engine. I revved it up a bit and all hell broke loose...it went BANG BANG BANG POW! and died hard!
Checked all the usual stuff of course, but I know it is dead.
94,000 miles.....not too bad I guess. I had the feeling that with the way it was boosting with the RB catback on that I might have some trouble. I guess I shouldn't have taken it out with it this cold, though it is like 30 degrees F here.
I may just go out and start taking **** off, and get ready to pull the engine sometime soon.
Hell....EVERYONE needs a good project every now and then, right?

You know what is weird is my son has good, straight teeth. But the dentist has indicated that "as a precautionary measure" he'd like to put braces on.

I listen to this as I look outside at his pretty new BMW......

I dunno guys....I may see about just selling the car as is and taking the money and putting it towards a 5 speed car. I'm just kind of bummed out right now.
At least it made it home......kind of like when a dog gets hit on the road but manages to crawl back home to die...

Save Old Yeller!

Baja, you can't let it die. LIVE, LIVE, LIVE!!!

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him ...... we have the technology.....da, da, da, da (bionic sounds....)

I'll upload the pics of the t04s engine bay to inspire you! Maybe I'll through in a pic of my TR6 engine bay.

This is your opportunity. It will be difficult to sell with a blown motor anyway.

Well just make sure you take a lot of pictures if you can. Remove everything cleanly and get ready for the mess. I have been a tune up and drive ability guy for 20 years and am just getting ready to install a new street port in my 93. I have seen a lot of engine configurations in my time but never like this one. Normally the engine is the biggest thing under the hood with this set up the bolt on pluming etc is. Start fresh and clean.

I've pulled many, many engines in many, many cars over the years (you get GOOD at this when you own English cars, right Beast? ). A lot of them I've rebuilt myself, including various V8s, and 4 and 5 cylinder in-line engines of various makes....hell even one diesel.
I don't think the actually removing and re-installing would be that bad, though there is SO little hand room for a big guy like me....
I think the thing that has me fretting the worst is the fact that without a good aftermarket ECU setup (limited options with the auto tranny) I could EASILY blow the new engine. At least with a piston engine you know you are going to go a 100K miles or so without too much trouble when you rebuild.

If I pull it I am going to make a digital scrapbook, and try and detail as much as possible to share with others.

Bajaman, why not throw a 5 spd in your car at the same time? I have a friend of mine, thats selling a complete swap for $1400. Everything from the gear set, to the shifter and trim. Later, CJ

Not to get off topic, but that dentist is trying to fleece you out of some serious cashola. "A precautionary measure?" Give me a break; it's either major crowding of the teeth or it isn't.

Now, back to topic. You didn't happen to install the hi-flow cat when you doing this throttle romping, did you? That would spell a death knell right there with a stock ECU.

Sorry to hear about the engine. I'd try to go ahead with the 5-speed swap, instead of trying to sell the car with a blown engine. You will probably end up better in the long run.

Just get a boost controller and you'll be boosting fine with the mods you have...one the new engine.

Why is everyone obsessed with "extra" striaght teeth?

sorry to hear about the loss.

No, the high flow cat is not on the car.
It was so weird how it went....all in all. I just remember thinking, "This is not NEAR as fast as it used to go...." as I was accelerating.

Man, I just don't know what to do. IF (big if) I can get around $5k for the car with the blown engine, I will sell it. The car is in really good shape otherwise. I am going to run a couple of ads just for grins I think. If no interest then I'll probably go ahead with the rebuild.
I've thought long and hard about the 5 speed swap, but I really think I would just BUY a manual tranny version, rather than mess with all the swap hassle.
