Is this still a "ding" or just a resulting paint imperfection?

Is this still a "ding" or just a resulting paint imperfection?

Hey all,

Thinking about the "distorion" thing that I was talking about earlier, it got me thinking --

My FD used to have a ding in the driver's side door, about 4 or 5 inches from the rear edge. It happened long before I bought the car, someone apparently hit it while opening their door. The previous owner had it repaired by a dent doctor. If I look along the edge of the car lengthwise, especially from the back to the front, it looks like a ripple in the paint. However, I cannot see anything once I start looking at it from above, even if I look along the edge from the top or bottom of the car. I don't think I can feel anything running my fingers along it either.

My question is, did this "ding" not get completely repaired? Or is there a ripple always left over from paintless ding repairs? I am planning to remove the interior door panel to see if I can get access to it, and massage it the rest of the way out with a rod or roller of some sort. But if it's just a paint thing, that would be fixed by repainting, then I don't want to do all that work for nothing.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Yeah that's what I hear. But I'm talking about the remains of an actual dent that used to be on the door, not those other things.

I'm just wondering if since I can only see the ripple from certain angles, is the ding still partially there, or is it just a paint thing leftover from the repair? Is there any way to take care of it, if it IS just a paint thing (besides repaint)?

BTW a bit more info, I can only see the ripple if I'm more than a foot or two away from it when I do look lengthwise down the side of the car. Closer than that and I can't make it out at all.

Is there any way to eliminate the wavy appearance?

EdwardNorth,

I replied to your other thread already and first off you have a really nice clean FD (i forgot to mention that before). I have owned my 93 R1 for 4 years now its not a daily driver and i noticed stress indentations on my car more and more as it ages. The R-package models you can see it more cause if the paint is still original the paint is thinner on the R-package cars (i guess to save weight). I honestly wouldnt drive yourself crazy over the distortions, its not worth it. The only thing that will correct them totally is to prep and repaint the car when the time comes.

Besides if you plan on keeping it, this will have to be done in the next couple of years if the factory paint has lasted that long already.

Thanks, I appreciate it!

Yeah, I'm not really worried about the stress indentations too much right now. I do want to try to get the ding-induced distortion out of the door though. Yeah it's one of those things that pretty much only *I* can see but it drives me crazy! Maybe if I rub about 50 lbs. worth of Scratch/Swirl remover on it...? Just kidding!

It will be a few years before I have it repainted though. I'm trying to plan out what I'm going to do each year, and I figure that once I've gotten just about all of my performance modding done, I'll put the icing on the cake with a fresh professional repaint in good ol' Montego Blue! Man I love this color. It will really be something once I do the tan to black conversion next year.

Thanks for the replies guys.
