Well now I really don't knwo what to do. I took apart my starter 2 nights ago cleaned it out quite well, and slapped it back together. Works just fine but I still geta hesitation to turn once and a while. I figure it was ashor tin the starter becasue I had gotten some brake fluid in it but nope...I've checked all my connections runnign to and form the starter and battery and NOTHING is loose...so what do you guys think?

Ive had similar situations typically when the engine was hot and Ive parked and shut it off for a while. This does not happen all the time, only occasionally. Found that if I turned off all accessories such as heater fan, ac, lights, etc when starting, it restarted just fine.

Thanks for the input but it happens on cold starts too. I still think I have a short else where I just can't pin point it for the life of me. Its not like hot start problems. Its as if the starter just shorts a bit before it even has a chance to turn over. and if I turn the key back and forth once or twice it'll start right up.

Almost sounds like it could be you ignition switch. Is you battery at full capacity?

Could be a sticky starter solenoid, or possibly the solenoid contacts are dirty (need to replace solenoid). If it clicks but doesn't turn over, the contacts are dirty. If it doesn't click, but lights and other things stay bright, the solenoid is sticky. If the lights dim, you have a bad ground or other bad battery-terminal connection, or the starter or battery is bad. If none of the above happen at first, it could be that the ignition switch or the clutch switch are not contacting properly.

Sorry if this seems like a foolish question, but the solenoid is on the starter I take it right? If so is it the small canister on the starter? Becasue Liek I said I took that apart and well....cleaned it alll out with electrical parts cleaner quite well I might add.

I have this problem as well. To me It sound like the stater. I here the click of the soleniod but no starter action. This will happen almost every time I go to start the car. I have not taking the time to check this out. I fegured that it is the starter or the clutch switch.

If you just hear a click when you try to turn over the car its most likely a dead solenoid. Try reaching under the car and smacking it with somthing pretty solid, if it works after that its definitely the solenoid.

BTW if anyone needs one, I have a remanufactured starter for sale with about 5 k miles.

^ as he stated. its the soleniod its that smaller round object ontop of the starter. the clicking doesnt mean its engaging. it means its trying to! i bet i can read your mind. you cycle the key and hear clicking several times then it finally starts one of those times. the trick to being 100 percent sure is to smack it while you have the key to start if it engauges when you hit it then you know its the solenoid. though 99% its the solenoid from what you say. just get a reman starter!

Bah...no it clicks once or twice and then doesn't until I turn the key all the way off, and then on again. then it'll usually start up just fine.
