Safe Engine temps??

I just got my PFC installed and am curious exactly what is too hot / when I should get worried. I only have the stock engine temp gauge in so I am using the PFC to tell temps. I wait till it warms up to around 60*C before driving around. What is pretty much the highest I should let the engine get to before pulling over and popping the hood?? I got up to 115*C yesterday in traffic...

Thanks guys,
Levi

average in winter is about 88*C and in the summer it will hover around 99*C with the fans kicking on slightly over 100*C

personally i prefer to lower the fan switch on points, the engines run hotter than i like to see with the factory settings. 100*C is pretty toasty warm..

if you start nearing 110*C or higher then you may want to consider pulling off the road and turning the engine off because you probably have a problem.

239 is too hot. 230 is about as high as I would ever want to see an FD engine. I try to keep mine to a maximum of 210-215. This can be easily done with a fan controller.

Yes~~~ Normal temps are around the 85-90 range.
Higher than 120 - 130 then you need to pull over and cool it down... it happened to me when I was heading to Vegas and on the up hill it started to rise~~ hehehe.
But if its stock setup then there is no worries~~

I made the mistake of turning me engine off after running my car pretty hard and when it sat there and heatsoaked I saw 106 degrees on the PFC.

For me though, normal operating temps are 82-85C on most days, 87 is the hottest normal operating temp. I've ever recorded but that was on a very hot day. I guess that's the magic of the Koyo. I never hear my fans click on when I'm driving.

Hrm... I have a Koyo in there. How would I reprogram my fans to cut on at a lower temp??

I think part of the problem may be that I am missing that plastic belly tray that runs under the radiator to keep air from flowing past the rad and under the car. I will be getting up with Fritz this weekend (hopefully) to pick up one of his spares... hopefully that will help alleviate the problem. I typically see right around 90*C on regular highway speed driving.

that is a HUGE part of cooling. I think lots of people underestimate the importance of a good, functioning undertray. They help massively to help extract hot air from the engine bay. Seriously, they make a BIG difference, and I don't think you should do other modifications until you log the difference once you get that piece on.

There is something wrong with your cooling system. Period. Your fans are not operating properly or there is something wrong with the coolant or your t-stat.

You need the FC-Datalogit (or borrow someone else's) to lower the temps that the fans turn on.

A missing undertray would cause problems at speed, not so much when sitting in traffic.

It's going to heat soak if you let it cool off after a hard run or not. in the summer mine may get over 100C, from a normal 85-86C, if I park for 5min then come back and crank it up.

And for the other guy if you saw any where near 120C on the street you have a problem, and no an upgraded radiator won't fix it unless the stock one is messed up. I can run a 25min session on the track and not even hit 110C, and that is with twins.

Drive at 30 miles per hour. Swith on your heater on the # 3 setting. Stick your index finger out the window and count to ten. Then multiply by 100 and roughly that equals your water temps in C.

To roughly convert to F: double that number and add 32.

got it

lol

but yeah a temp gauge is a great idea. But if you are in the market for a power Fc might as well get that instead.

Honestly, I think the 115*C was due to heat soak. I noticed that after I came out of the store and just popped my hood for a couple of minutes before driving. Definitely plan to get the undertray this weekend. Going to look into budgeting for a datalogit. Anyone have a used one, or know where I can get one?
