What does pinging sound like in a rotary engine. I hear sone strange rattling coming from the engine in my 93 Rex and it sounds worse in first gear. I never heard it before and wondering if it was pinging. It idles fine and starts easy. any help is appreciated.

PS mine sounded like rattling exhaust shield
Did the sound come from the center of the car behind the dash? I have been getting this sounds above 45 MPH. it was like a snoring sound almost. hopefully it's just a piece of debris somewhere.
the air pump often makes some crappy noises when it's going bad.... does it make the noise at idle or when it's not in gear? can you pop the hood & rev the engine to reproduce it?
Pinging is the same thing as detonation. Detonation sounds like popcorn(from what I've heard). It normally isn't constant. Just a few good pops, and then your engine is gone. Try putting some ATF in the engine. Carbon deposits can make the engine have a pinging noise(according to the shop manual).
Automatic transmission fluid. You put it in your sparkplug holes and then crank the engine up. It will smoke like hell, but clean the engine quite well. You could also get some professional, engine cleaning stuff, but why bother.
