Apparently you need to replace the ecu and do some other mods that I would have done anyway, but has anyone ever done this or heard about doing it. (or have any leads at all?)
I've also been told that it requires modifying or replacing the wire harness. I can't imagine that's too hard, but the guy at Rotary Performance said it would be no easy task. He's never done one, though, so he didn't really know the specifics.
he did it to the mbm one and i know a few others have 2

You're in luck - http://www.sevenspeed.com/ (aka http://www.exit13b.com ) is close to you (well closer for you then me, hehe). George has done a few conversions, and I would take mine up there 'cept its a bit far. I'm just short a few parts myself, and will be taking mine to MZM in Austin at the end of January. They quoted me $550 labor if I bring everything needed. Can't beat it like a sore weanie!
You're right, the only thing 'difficult' is the wiring. That's really the only difficult thing to figure out. Once a person figures that out, it's pretty much bolt-on stuff from there.
Where in Princeton do you live? I have relatives up there and I go up there once or twice a year. I'm thinking of taking the 7 this year for a little road trip.
Thanks a ton man. That's just what I was looking for.
When I'm in Princeton, I live in 1938 Hall, room 221. I'm a 20 year old soph. at the University with the same name. I'll definitely check out your 7 if you bring it up. Hopefully I'll have my own 7 soon (though if I get this one it will be auto until I get that taken care of. . . .)
I'm having George at Sevenspeed do my swap mid February. He knows how to adapt the wiring harness on the auto to work with the 5 speed. Most people swap the whole harness and that's a lot of labor.

Oh, if that's the case - wait for a manual, unless the auto is pristine/color you want/etc. If I did again now I'd have waited, but it was Silverstone like I wanted and I was not planning on doing much to it. Funny that when I was shopping for mine, there were almost no 7s to be found (let alone Silver), but after I bought the market got flooded with them. Must have patience!
Meanwhiles, have some of that good stuff from Hoagie Haven for me - I'm dying for some hoagies from there!
Yeah, I'm very patient, but If I can get a near mint silver 95 (and I mean near mint, you should see the guy's yard ) and then convert it to 5 speed for a total no higher than $15000, would you? The 5 speeds I see are mostly 94's (I'm not willing to get a 93) and they are in worse shape and the owners are asking for more. If the conversion is a solid process and the result is as good as having the 5 speed to begin with, I'm seriously considering going through with the whole thing.
The trouble is that once I fork over all that loot I won't be able to buy hoagies (not even the rat-meat ones). . . just kidding. . . I have a healthy amount stashed away, and tuition can wait for now. . .

Dude, you really need to go and take a look at Mazda's official production numbers and see what you've stumbled across. Buy that car tomorrow, I'm serious.
That's one of the 2nd or third rarest combos, depending on if its a PEP or base. If you don't want it, PM me and I'll go up there and p/u it up.
:p Hell, I'd leave it an auto.
You're not accusing Hoagie Haven of serving substandard fare, are you!? I'll have you know I grew up on that stuff! (hiding twitching) .

Oh, and I'm not even going to ask how much that is. I know how much it cost my cousins in the late eighties, and I hate to think how much it is now. Smart folks like me go to publik univercitys....:p
