new guy here with sum questions

hey guys im new to this forum but not to forums and cars. i am however new to rx7's and fd's to be more specific. i have a pretty modified s13 coupe and always said that the only car i would sell it for or trade it for is a fd. well i was looking through craigslist and found something in my range and i need your guys input to see if the car in question is a good deal.

here is the ad: "3rd generation Rx7 ,red ,tan leather, greddy guages, greddy turbo timer,AFC controller ,lowered 1 1/2 ,apex exhaust, rear R1 wing and strut bar,60k rebuild all new seals ,car has 100k ,real clean ,garage kept and babied,Well im looking for bmw trades ,suv trades , .Car is very rare and very fast puts you into the seat every time. clean title and car fax car is originaly from virginia. but in new york now ,other possible trades let me know ,the car is auto with shift improvers ,greddy motor oil ,redline trans and gear oil"
here are sum pix

i called the guy yesterday. he told me that the engine was rebuilt at 63k with new seals and new vaccum lines. he also said that it was rebuilt with jdm turbos. one question i have is how can i tell if the turbos are really jdm? wat other things should i be looking for with this car as far as engine goes which is the only thing im not really familiar with?

any help would be appreciated. thank u guys.

If the JDM turbos are 93-95, then there shouldn't be any difference. if they are 99+ then they are different.

If they work perfectly, that's the most important part.

and has there been a compression test done recently? Check the boost pattern too. should be 10-8-10 unless there are other mods to change that. If so, be sure to check for the supporting mods to run higher boost reliably. And a fun one: Has the fuel filter been changed recently?

It says it is an automatic. You sure about getting an automatic sportscar? The previous advice is good. Reading the FAQ's at the top of the list aka stickies you will find a section posted by Mahjik called "Buying......." that is your best bet right there. I am guessing you are lazy so here I did the work for you.....

hey thanx guys. i've read on here that not having the cats will raise the boost so i'll check for that. thanx for the links as well. the automatic part wont stay that way for long, i researched it and it seems pretty feasible at my friends shop with lifts and huge compressor. i completely missed the buying section lol thanx for that as well. i posted cuz i wanted to see if u guys had any opinions or things that havent been mentioned in other threads. thanx again.

If you plan on doing a transmission swap there are more parts involved than just the transmission. You should check up on it in the sticky where I took the other things from, thank you Mahjik.

It is a pretty complicated job and although your friend has the shop does he really want you taking up valuable space for a few weeks?

Regardless if your mind set is to do the transmission swap you should hold that in consideration for the price so let's say 2k lower than you would normally pay for the car.

if the fuel filter has been changed recently gives you an idea as to how dedicated the owner was to keeping his car in tip-top shape. If the car ran lean and blew the first motor, and they didn't replace the fuel filter, along with going through the entire fuel system, then how effective is the new engine going to be.... and for how long? Plus, it is a PITA! Once you do it once, you'll have it down, but the first time sucks.

Things I do when buying a used car:
Oil and Filter, Coolant flush, transmission gear oil (ATF in your case), Rear end gear oil, fuel filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires, air filter.
Things to do when buying a used RX7: .The sticky's have it all. The FAQ is a gold-mine of useful information.

thanx guys. i read mahjik's thread. seems like the only problem is getting all the parts. dont think it would take longer than a week if that with 3 people going at it. is the rx7 fuel filter different than other cars? i've done fuel filters on my cars before but dunno maybe the fd is different.

Fuel filter is just in a really bad spot and it's hard to avoid getting gas down your arm (and everywhere else.) Search for the fuel filter relocation writeup and relocate the filter when you change it. It might help to pull the EGI relay and run the engine out of gas before starting the change and also remove the gas cap. At worst the will at least depressurize the system. I changed mine with the car on jackstands and it was a nightmare (well at least a bad dream.) After the relocation it's going to be a 5 min. job.
