Just put in Redline 75w90 in the tranny & diff, & I still get grinding into 2nd.

I was hoping that changing & upgrading my tranny fluid would smooth things out with my tranny from 1st to 2nd, but nope. Any ideas of what may be causing the grinding into 2nd on decent launches? It doesn't grind every time, pretty much just when I'm trying to take off nice & hard from a stop to enjoy a nice 0-60 run, y'know?

Do I need to drop & dismantle the whole transmission for any sort of fix? Would a good quality(mazdaspeed) short shifter help at all?

Synchros are grinding. Either replacing those synchros or replacing the tranny would do the trick.

I figured that, I guess the main question is, without dropping the tranny to chnage the synchros, would a short shifter kind of help? I figured since the throws are shorter & more precise, that it might just pop into gear more accurately without so much grinding.

No...if your synchros are bad they are bad and you can't fix that. You can only make it a lil smoother with thicker gear oil which is what I've done but it still grinds just not as harsh so that is how you know the synchros are definetely bad.

Ian,

I've found that different fluids have different affects. I have redline in my tranny as well but Edgar rebuilt most of it. I would consider trying Neo Synthetic. I've read some good stuff about it.

It's unlikely the shifter will do anything.

Your synchro, gear dogs, and slider teeth are probably all worn on 2nd gear. The faster you try to engage that gear the more you'll feel it. Either a tranny rebuild or another tranny is what you'll need to get back into snappy fast gear engagement. If you go the rebuild route, realize that changing just the synchro is only 1/3rd of the components that make for a good shift. The teeth on the gear and the teeth the on shift slider also get damaged and cause shifting problems, and if you get a rebuild done you should budget to have a few of those parts replaced.

In addition to what has been mentioned, you should make sure your clutch is fully depressed and disengaging completly. If it doesn't, then it will be more difficult to pull the gear, esp. with worn syncros.

I had a bad grind in 3rd gear on my DSM. I swapped out the tranny fluid I had in it with GM Synchromesh and the grind went away. I think it just buys you time for the inevitable. I did this with my Type R teg also and it fixed the second gear grind.

Thanks Dave....after reading that thread, I plan on switching to Neo in a few months to see if there's a difference.

Hope you're surviving without Edgar up there!

I would also make sure that the clutch is adjusted properly. If it is engaging close to the floor, that would add to the difficulty of easy engagement when shifting quickly. The clutch pedal engagement height can be easily adjusted by loosening the push rod attached to the clutch pedal (12mm wrench??), and turning the rod to adjust engagement height. Be sure that you leave a tiny bit of play.
