Just got rear ended, here are a few quick pics

I was driving home from my girlfriends house when I stopped at a redlight to see a silver mustang coming fast in my rear view mirror. I heard the brakes lock up, then smash. From what I can tell it doesn't look too bad, but its dark and I really don't know much about body work and such. It looks like I'm going to need a new bumper, but I'm not sure what else. It looks like my exhaust may have gotten crushed in as well, but it might just look that way b/c of the bumper. I'm going to the body shop tomorrow to get a quote and I guess I'll just have to go from there.

Anyone have any guesses on what would have to be done / how much it would cost, I'm just curious.

Sorry about the pics being blurry, my camera kinda sucks.

Sorry to hear about your incident. Hopefully it's just the bumper skin that needs replacing and not the actual structural bumper. Go to the best body shop in your area, it's on insurance.....

Good luck.

Thank you for the concern, from what I can tell it isn't too bad. I'll find out for sure tomorrow when I talk to the body shop.

EDIT: It just so happens that a friend of the family works at the best body shop, so that wasn't even a concern.

No, the police weren't called. I'm really not too experienced when it comes to this sort of thing, but from what I could tell it didn't look too bad, and i didn't want to make it into a bigger deal than it had to be.

ALWAYS call the police and make sure the other driver stays there. If the driver won't stay, get their information YOURSELF.

This may not be so important in no-fault insurance states but your life will be much, much easier most of the time.

I got the plate number, her name, cell number, home phone, and work phone. According to whitepages all the info matched up to what she gave me.

I wish I had known about the police thing, but she said her insurance was already really high and said she'd rather pay it out of pocket. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

EDIT: Just out of curiosity, how much would a bumper skin cost?

It may not be too late to call the Police. They'll send a Unit to your house, If you have adverse driver information,..just hand it over to the authorities. If the adverse driver does not carry Liability Insurance,..and if you have uninsured motorist insurance (UIM), your insurance will cover your Property Damage and any injuries you may have sustained. BUT,...a police report has to be issued and/or you will need to produce adverse driver information to your insurance agent.

You need to call your Agent ASAP to report the accident.

The cover and black lip is about $650-700. The structural reinforcement and pads are another $450 or so. That obviously doesn't count painting, which will be several hundred more at a GOOD body shop.

If your exhaust was hit, make sure to have the shop check out everything in the path from the exhaust back to the engine.

......plus labor. And there's always hidden damage that won't be discovered till the rear bumper assembly comes off. It will not be a cheap repair!!

Thank you for all the information guys. My parents said not to worry about calling the police because they feel like its making it bigger than it has to be. I'm going to go by the body shop tomorrow to try to get a quote, then call the lady and go from there.

Just cause info: Her car was a lot worse than mine. She's going to need a new front bumper, new headlights, maybe a hood and most likely some other random things.

EDIT: There are some good things that will hopefully come out of all this.

1. There was a tad bit of paint on the rear that had started to bubble so that will be fixed.

2. The back end of my car will be exceptionally pretty (thats the only part anyone sees anyway =D)

3. After it comes out of the body shop I'll appreciate owning the car much more. =D

RE Super G: Yes, it was definitely a girl in a newer style v6 mustang. I hated those things before, now i really hate them.

areXseven: Will do.

I'll have some clearer pictures up tomorrow at some point.

Once again thank you for all the help, info, fast replies, and concern.

This is the reason you should call the police/insurance agent in...

If she caused $2K damage to your car, which is easily possible, and another $2-3K damage to her own, then it is possible that she won't be able to fix both your and her car out of her pocket. And once she get all the information for your repair and hers, it might be too late to report it.

It won't be a problem if i were to report it tomorrow, would it? Like I said before a friend of ours works at the best body shop in town and I don't think it would be much of a problem for him to look at it tomorrow. If the $2-3k estimates are correct I'll contact her and go from there. Do yall think this is an acceptable course of action?

EDIT: I just checked out the exhaust and its crushed in behind the muffler at the bend. Not horribly bad, but It's definitely going to need to be replaced. That means it's going to be another $533 than whatever the bodywork is going to cost.

Dude she must have been really good looking or something for you not to have at least called the cops to get a report. Always get the police report. You will have a serious problem filling a claim with your insurance if she isn't insured.

NO!. You should really call the authorities to report the accident LIKE RIGHT NOW. Also call your Carrier and let them handle the claim on your behalf.

And don't be surprised if you wake-up symtomatic.

http://www.dmv.dot.state.nc.us/drive...4/Crashes.html

In the event you are involved in a crash:

You are required by law to make an immediate report to the nearest enforcement officer or agency of any crash when any person is killed or injured or the total damage to cars and other property appears to amount to $1,000 or more. Failure to make the report may result in prosecution, and your driver license could be suspended. You should also report any crash to your insurance company. In certain cases, North Carolina law also requires the driver of a vehicle involved in a reportable crash to provide proof of financial responsibility (liability insurance) on forms provided by the Division of Motor Vehicles. These forms must be completed and filed with the DMV.

I actually just saw that on the DMV's website. Its almost 1am and both of my parents are saying just to file the report in the morning. Thank you for all the info guys, otherwise I never would have thought to check DMV's site about it.
