I notice there are plenty of different companies that many re flashes for the stock unit. as well as piggyback (IE the Fcon) and as far as the upgrades go on the car it seems retuning the ECU (in some form) seems to be a healthy objective.

Despite the fact that at hi RPM my car SPEWS vasts amount of gas vapors you can smell a block away and nobody will drive behind me, I want to up grade my ECU,


What do you recommend? something for a light tune. AT MOST in the next while the only think performance wise I will have done is open things up, and MAYBE if I rebuild a turbo set have those shinned a little.


Here's the catch people keep telling me to go with a piggy back and go get it tuned. But I'm not looking for max power here, I'm looking for drive ability.

If you want something you can tune, get a PFC. If you want something with set maps, and don't want to go over about 340 rwhp, get an M2, or Pettit ECU. Those work nicely, and can be purchased used for around $300-$350.

question about the PFC, something I can never seem to get a straight answer about, the PFC don't come with a proper street tune and you HAVE to dyno them?


I'm not looking to go over the 340 mark, not for a long while, so it would be worth dropping in a ecu and not have to worry about it.

FD3S1 - base map (good for intake, catback)

FD3S4 - base mod map. (good for intake, downpipe, hi-flo cat, catback, IC and still a bit rich)

all the new PFC + commander combo package are all FD3S4 (for 8 bit 92-95 FD3S)


Reflashed ECU are definitly good enough, and pretty cost effective. But PFC lets you read all the factory sensors, and its more tuner friendly if you ever need to get it done. Just make sure you find out the exact spec the reflashed ECU is tuned for if you go the cheaper route.

The PFC base mod map(the one all the newer ones come with) is plenty safe for 300+ hp with a stock port and twins. You may want to check on the AFR's if you up the boost much, say 12+, or maybe have a midpipe, but just borrow someones WB 02 and you can do that for free.

You can put all the bolt-ons on, and run 10 psi on the stock ecu, and make nearly 300 rwhp reliably and safely. If you want a drop-in chip to run 12-13 psi, pick up a used Pettit. If you want a more advanced and completely adjustable ecu, get the Apexi PFC.

A search would have been nice since this is the 3rd discussion on this in the last few days.

like rynberg said keep the boost at 10 psi with all the Bolt-ons and you will be fine and plenty fast for the street. you need to find out why your car spews so much raw fuel! if you are on the stock ecu you need to run a high flow or stock cat with the air pump. this should take care of the smell

sounds like the PFC is the way to go, now I just need to find one.. Odly enough at the time of starting this thread the car stopped putting out so much fuel, I can tell because one; I don't pass out anymore everytime I come to a stop light, two; because it doesn't smell like I'm standing behind a cessna anymore.

But I'm going to look into the whole thing soon, just trying to get the ECU lined up at the same time. This was all started because I want to put on an exhaust on the car because my stock one is making funny noises. But I figure it's safer to do all this in stages.


I would have modded intake, DP, exhaust, mid pipe, and safety stuff. As far as engine performance upgrades go, thats all I'm looking for for a while. (not including 'flow' mods)

because you're probably going to ask this question when you get the midpipe: "why am i overboosting?" you need to have your turbos ported, get a restrictor plate, or run a highflow catalytic converter to control your backpressure.

I would make sure the car is running 100% before putting the ECU in. An aftermarket ECU is a great upgrade, but it's not a solution to fix problems. The car should run in tip-top shape before you do any mods to it.

That said, I'm partial to the PowerFC - plugs in, and you have better driveability than stock and the headroom to do whatever you want mod-wise to the car. But, chipped ECU's are easier on the wallet and also work quite nicely.

I agree - piggybacks have no business on the FD. There's some really nice ones out there (like the E-manage) but the way the FD's ECU is designed, it just doesn't work worth a flip. Not to mention with the PowerFC so damn cheap, you're almost to buying a PFC if you buy a piggyback!

agreed, the high flow will be on it's way soon, as soon as I get all my brake stuff in.
(cheap cross/slotted rotors, KVR semi metallic pads, brake lines, syn. fluid, and probably will end up getting rebuilt calipers) cost me enough as is.

who has a PFC with or with out the commander for sale? anybody? anybody?


And the boost creep thing I understand, it's one of my biggest concern.
