part 2 of this thread.. how much did you guys buy your rx7s for and how much money has gone into it? haha and can you ever spend too much on your baby? hahaha thanks feel free to take this thread whichever direction you want. laters

Looks like you want a car with all the work allready done for you. My guess is your gonna pay around 20k for what you are looking for. I bought my car for 9k and drove from So Cal to Dallas to pick it up. It s all i could really afford but i got exacly what i wanted except for the color. So far I have put around 3k into the car in aftermarket parts.

I'm still in highschool so I undertand where you come from in the money situation. I bought mine for 11k and it only has 51,000 miles. All stock so far I've only put on APEX'i N1 Exhaust but im looking forward to more engine upgrades. With 400hp to the crank I'd expect maybe around 18-20k.

I'm looking into getting a rx-7 fd as well (stock/near stock) and so far I've come to the conclusion that a stock/near stock rx-7 fd for around 10-16 thousand dollars is reasonable, anything above it is too high in my opinion.

cool thats what i figured.. i dont really have "hook ups" and not too much self knowledge either (just stuff learned on this awesome forum). i think i want to buy an rx7 with mods done for like 20k.. mostly engine mods. but i want less than 80k miles on chassis and under 15k miles on engine. haha but high hopes for poor college student. thanks for the opinions. so heres the low down.. dude i hang out in the same group with just got a g35 from his parents and always bragging.. man i want to see him in my rearview and know i got there myself.

From what I am hearing, it will be an utter mess if you try to own a FD when you are in college w/ little money and little know-how on cars. I say you wait until you get out of college or have a stable job w/ a stable pay check. Not only is the gas pretty hefty if this is your primary car, but you have to also factor in the expensive insurance for a college student, repair costs (since you don't know how to work on it yourself -- and there will be repairs), and general maintenance costs.

I have seen some people who try to get a bargain FD and they end up with something far less than stellar. And if all you want to do is beat stock G35's, there are a line of easier to maintain/cheaper cars that you can choose from. Anyways, good luck.

I deffinetly agree with you WaLieN. I personally wouldnt rely on a Fd for my daily driver. Im a poor college student myself but i allready had a primary car paid off when i got my FD. I have alot of really good hookups on aftermarket parts and do all my own work. If i diddnt there would be no way i could afford it. If your planning on picking up a 400hp fd dont plan on it being very reliable.

i spent 14k on my fd.

that same year i spent 8-10k on parts just to keep the thing from smoking like a chimney.

now im spending money on making it go fast.

this is not a college kids car.

get a wrx or a dodge neon SRT.

OR if u really want a rotary, an FC is a solid choice if u can get one in good shape at a fair price.

haha yea.. im gonna get a rx7 for sure.. it wont be my daily driver.. i already have a car i paid off in high school.. i have a pretty solid pay check (not big but.. enough for this hobby i think) and potato.. a NEON?!?! even if it is a srt 4 a NEON?!?! yikes.. im suprised a guy with a rx7 would suggest such a thing.. ahaha jk jk nice enough car but when your dream car is a rx7 a neon just wont do it.. hehe something me AND my bro want to work on together. we both have reliable cars and are insured under a family car.. so insurance wont be bad cause it will go in as a 6th car in a 4 member family.. haha thanks for the input. something i have to weigh when i decide to get an rx7.. but of course most of you believe the benefits out way the costs of an rx7

I am in college and I recently bought a 400 hp FD with 100k on the chassis and 1k on the motor for $17500. Here are a few things you should consider before buying this type of car, especially modified:
1. This is not my daily driver -- only a track/show car. YOU NEED ANOTHER DD.
2. If this is your first performance, car, I would recommend a WRX or EVO instead. I use to own a 200whp WRX I tracked occasionally. You should have some kind of driving experience before owning a highly modified FD. High horsepower RWD cars are NOT good introductory performance cars.
3. Good job and consistent pay are absolutely necessary. Fortunately, I have a good job and I get parts for cheap.
4. The cost of owning this car is significant, especially if you buy one already modded out, because problems will occur a lot more than a stocker.
5. If you do buy one modded out, make sure you have a few extra grand (2-3k) to throw into it the first year for the many problems you might encounter.

There are not only pros and no cons to owning these cars. Expect lots of down time especially for a highly modified FD. Do a lot more research before you consider buying one of these. Good luck.

Nate

If you have NEVER driven RWD do not get this car.

I suggest if you really want an FD, keep saving. Being in college is hard enough without having to worry about payments, upgrades, repairs. If you have no working knowledge of cars, this car is not for you.. unless of course you make a lot of money.

Nobody here is trying to keep you away from an RX-7 for any reason but other than to protect you to you are more stable. These cars are finicky, powerful, and expensive. 3 Things that can really ruin your life in a quickness.

If you are lookin for performance and want to spend a lot less money, have a car that will run everyday (most likely) buy a 240SX and drop an SR20DET. You can do this for around 8-10K with the cost of the car and a host of upgrades. That is my advice to you.

If you are still set on an RX-7. You've been warned. These cars don't have a reputation for nothing.
