Question Speedo and Odometer not working

This is different from the typical problems people have with the speedo and odometer, my speedometer doesn't work at all and the tripmeter or mileage has stopped increasing. I checked on my power FC and the speed isn't registering at all on there as well, it just reads "0". Is there a speed sensor on the tranny that causes this or is it the abs speed sensors? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If there is no reading on the PFC as well as the speedo, it is pretty safe to assume that the ECU is not reading speed because either "A" your speed sensor has gone bad or "B" something came disconnected. If you look in the FSM it gives a good illustration of all the sensors on the tranny and also gives continuity readings for them so you can tell if they have gone bad or not.
Also as a quick check, because I have had this happen on my S14 which I also have PFC on, when the meter fuse blew out my gauges didn't read and niether did the PFC. When replaced they both worked fine. IDK if it works the same on the FD but its worth a look.

Actually the signal that goes to the ecu for speed comes from the speedo. The speed sensor goes from the transmission to the speedo then to the ecu.

Oh and your speedo also controls your tach

Wow...now this is very helpful info, my tach just randomly cut out too at the same time the speedo did...so that helps explain a lot right there...I'm going to see if I can borrow a friend of mine's cluster and see if anything changes. All the other guages work too...water temp, fuel, and oil pressure. Thanks

Get under the car to see if the speedometer cable (to the tranny) came off, or is broken.

had the same problem bro.. its your speedo board.. something is wrong with it.. i tried fixing the capacitors but it never worked.. i thought it was the vehicle speed sensor.. so i borrowed a friends cluster and everything worked just fine. thus it was my cluster. i'm still trying to repair it.. let me know what you come up with. i might buy a new cluster myself

oh.. and Mr rick is completely right. its VSS to the cluster/speedometer then to the ECU.. because my PFC didnt' read anything either with the bad cluster.. then with a new cluster it worked just fine. that means somewhere along the circuit on the speedometer board. theres a missing connection or bad resistor/capacitor.

Will do, I'm pulling out my cluster this weekend and testing it out using my friend's to see if the problem persists.

Well, definitely the cluster...right when I switched to the other one, the speedo and tach worked...except it has the jumpy tach crap. I'm thinking about combining the two to make a perfect cluster again...especially since I suck at electric work...probably just going the switch the speedo out with the mine and hopefully everything works...I'll take pics of the circuit board so maybe someone with electric know how can tell me what I need to replace.

What happened with this? I have a similar problem. first my odometer quit showing, then the very next day the speedo and tach quit moving, both at zero.

Replace these http://www.soothingpain.com/diy/8.jpg 1uF 50V condensators and resolder everytihing you can. I recomend replacing all of those in the same time. The reason why PFC isnt showing the speed is that the analog speed singnal is turned in to digital in tacho.

Well after changing out my speedo it worked for a bit, but now the mileage stopped showing and the kph on the PFC doesn't show. My tach still works and the speedo still works most of the time but occassionally trips out and reads what it feels like showing (20mph when I'm going 70mph and weird **** like that) I guess I'll have to try to get someone to replace the condensators for me since I suck at electronics. Eventually I'll just have someone build me a cluster using the speedhut guages and use their GPS speedo.

I swapped my cluster and the newer works but the speedo is not calibrated and reads like 50 mph high?! I was thinking of swapping speedos to see if my old one works , but there is noticeable burnish looking marks on the circuitry that the tape thingy clips into on the speedo (sorry not electronics literate).

Replaicing those is easy job and not even costly if you take it to local electronic shop and give them insturctions for assembly of cluster. allso it would be good to meassure the diods on it. Here are the pictures (text is in Finnish sorry) http://www.mazdago.net/index.php?topic=23177.0
