half height pop up headlights

Has anyone ever had any luck with finding and fitting a headlamp that is about half to 2/3 the height of the stock lamps?

I've seen a post where someone tried with not so good results, but this is the look that i really like:

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=144060

It seems that m-sport also has something along the lines that i'm talking about:

http://66.216.67.51/images/products/...ortfullpic.gif

There is always the dual 90 mm projectors, but I like the rectangle ones better.

any ideas suggestions?

What's the purpose of this rice effect?

Absolutely nothing performance oriented or aerodynamic about it.

Rice?? not that word again.

Its called improving on stock and making it look better at the same time. I too am going to be fabbing up a half headlight kit soon.

Sleek lights aren't the best for lighting due to how far they sit back on the bumper and we all know how bad the stock ones light.

An HID in a half pop up will light a lot better than a HID in a sleek light kit. You can install HID in the stock housings but the lenses suck and will have too much glare and not enough cutoff unless you change the housing.

I don't really think t-rex liked these lights because they somehow add more downforce to his car or add more horsepower. He was just trying to find a light that was better than stock and looked good at the same time as well.

Here is the kit I'm gonna fab up soon.

i like the stock look just fine.

if i had to choose one of those halfway up lights, id say the round lights look better for that.

thanks fumanchu. you'll have to let me know how yours comes out and what lights you plan on using. I have some experience with fiberglass if you want to possibly collaborate on making a shroud that will replace the stock ones

clyane; I dont believe i asked for oppinons, i do believe that this is an upgrade. It maybe not be performance wise, but i'm tyring to also improve visibility at night. If I just wanted to change the look regardless of quality, I would have simply done the mod that i linked to in this post.

My definition of rice is adding something that will greatly reduce performance with no other benefit but a trendy asthetic one. (so no, the '99 taillights are not rice) ;-) Thanks for your valuable reply though

rxseven1, I wouldn't pull the fuse, because i don't want to lose the functionality of the stock pop ups. i would modify the metal piece that pushes the light up so it doesn't raise as high.

The lights I am going to use are Hella Optilux DE's that are HID. Here is the link... http://www.hellausa.com/optilux/productpages/DEX.html

Wael El-Dasher said they have very very nice cut offs and are a 10times improvement over stock.

He then mounted a Hella DE Xenon for the high beams

Here are all the pics that Wael El-Dasher took of his install...

He described it being a pretty simple job and the mounting was the easiest part. As you can see there is a little dremel work that needs to be done on the stock housings but other than that it's not bad.

Modifying the motors said it took him awhile to figure out how they worked but once he did, he said he just put some insulation on the motor's internals to make them go up however far you wanted.

It looks like all this can be done for about 600 bucks and IMO it looks sweet as hell. Plus the pictures show the improvement was well.

Rice??? I think not. What performance or aero postives do 99 specs have Clayne???

Rice is like the word "evil". Once you call some one of that ilk, there ain't no rational discussion left.

Back to the thread.

I don't like the full pop up as they obscure part of my vision at night taking on-ramps.

The OEM stock sucks in beam pattern, coverage and power output.

Be careful about the HELLA DE. They look good in picture but don't give the coverage that the 90mm gives. The human eyes are different from cameras. The longer you leave the camera exposure on, any deficiencies in lighting pattern will be filled in, giving you the illusion that the lighting is much better than it is. I got fooled into buying the Sylvania X1010 exactly for this reason.

It's best to take a look at a light in person, especially since the Hella DE is designed to be a driving light, i.e., narrow beam extending further than the normal headlight.

The best beam pattern is the Honda S2000. Second best is the Hella 90mm.

Maybe I'll look into getting the 90mm for the actual headlight then. How much are they??

well i think that if it is smoked or something and you cant see the round lights unless they are on, then it would look good. i just dont like the bugeyed look when the lights are off and you can see them.

wael's lights loook very nice. is there any details/threads on how they were made/what was used? i'd like to make my own...

these arent really thaat ricey. i really dont like the "sleek" headlights though. i think they are ricey ugliness.

what kind of foglights are those? the stock lights are not very bright...

I think your confused.

The headlights go down to the stock position when they aren't on. And only go halfway when they are. They don't stay in the half-up position when they are off.

That would be retarded if they did.

Hey Poman... are these the 90mm Hella's you were talking about??

http://catalog.com/susq/hella/90mm.htm

For only 60 bucks a piece I am more than willing to try this very very soon. Shouldn't be too hard to make a bracket that goes inside the stock cradel to hold them.

NOPE!!!! The part number for HID 90mm was posted a few days ago BL18141 or something like that. $527 for a pair (not sure if it's a pair though).

The problem with this route is that there is no cover so the headlight looks unfinished. In Virginia, that's a flag to the safety inspector. Hence the reason for me to wait for Rotary extreme 2/3 pop up. Supposedly have a real nice cover but I haven't seen any pics yet. Cost is $1250 for HID low beam.

Another route is to buy the $60.00 low beam 90mm (which is designated as a H-9) and buy an HID retrofit kit for H9. But the beam pattern may not be desirable while the cost will be similar.

Even the 90mm non-HID's will light WAY better than the stock ones.

I just can't stomach spending 1300 bucks on something I can make. I could care less if it looks "unfinished". The only time you can see it is when the headlight is on and its dark anyways. Not a big deal to me.

Wael's kit doesn't look unfinished to me anyways.

I second that...I think I'll do the regular (non-HID) route. Shouldn't be too difficult to make a cover anyway. The only thing that concerns me is the 2/3 pop-up...need more details on how to do that.

Of which I specified it was "ricey."

This half headlight mod makes the car look idiotic. But I guess whatever people need to do to be "different."

WOW, SOUNDS LIKE YOU DRIVE HELLA INTERSTATE! HOW MANY MILES DOES ONE PUT ON A CAR TAKING "ON-RAMPS" ALL THE TIME.
