Fixing Center Console Panel

Okay, minor problem, most could live with it but I'm ****, so....

My center console shifter panel, on the back edge, like around the ash tray, it has never layed down perfectly from day one. The tabs are broke enough that it doesn't snap tight and just kind of hovers like 1/2 inch out of place, and if you move the ebrake it wiggles a little. The front tabs still snap tight, but literally nothing is holding it down in the rear. I thought maybe it was the wiring underneath holding it up, but that's not the case.

So, my question....if a guy took out the ash tray, drilled a small hole through the bottom of the ash tray pocket and then put a self tapping screw down through, is this a safe idea? How close is the tranny under there or anything else that is up against the metal under the car, or is there enough space that a small, like 1/2 inch with a truss head or maybe a pan head so it stays flat and doesn't interfere with the ash tray sitting in it's place properly.

I just want that damn thing to sit flush like it's suppose to, and velcro or the like is not something I would really consider as it is a cheap fix and won't last with heat and whatnot. I want something permanent, but yet so the panel is obviously still easily removed and that's why I thought one little screw would do the trick.

You could do that, there is space under there for a metal screw 3/4" long to clear. The vinyl center cover has two screws of it's own in a bracket on back that clear just fine. I'd get a new console, search the FS section.

To the rear of the shifter, there is nothing close. Just find a screw that's not overly long and you'll be fine.

My panel is perfect other than the tabs being broke, so I think it would be a waste to do that.

Thanks guys.
