yes, thermal wrap will quiet it down a bit. i got mine from summit racing. i think it was the DEI stuff. also get the clamp type thing to hold the wrap on. i got the DEI clamp stuff and cut to fit as needed. i wrapped the down pipe while it was on the car. fyi - the down pipe will smoke like its burning after you put the wrap on.
as for the smoking, are you sure you got a good seal between the gaskets? try maybe using some new gaskets and some exhaust gasket sealant stuff.

i have an apex n1 exhaust w/ a silencer on it .. i got apex intake as well .. as for the downpipe i dont have the slightest clue .. the thing is when i bought the car .. the seller had the exhaust and intake mods already ... and he gave me the downpipe .. but i just got around to putting it myself .. uhmm .. as for the gaskets i got brand new ones from malloy mazda .. it dunno how to describe the smell .. smells kinda like some chemicals .. thats the best way i can describe it

rescue - dont sweat it. Im assuming you used some kind of penetrant on the studs of the stock pipe and did the same when putting in the new ones.
I think its the penetrant buring off - mine smoked pretty good for about 10-15 minutes after i started the car when the install was done. Took her for a nice, spirited drive, and when i got back, smoke was gone!
If your seal is not tight, then its exhaust. Just remount the pipe.
Good luck

Don't put wrap on a mild steel pipe - it won't stand the extra heat. The mild steel will quickly degrade and fall apart if wrapped.
