Differences in JDM import engines?
Can anyone tell me the differences in imported JDM engines?
Type I -->V
I know some of the basics eg
Type I series 6 had the grey/silver inlet snorkel between the intercooler and throttle body.
Type II ??
Type III (Last of the series 6 / Australian series 7)
Type IV (JDM Series 7) First to change the vacuum boxes and solonoids??
Basically I am wanting to know what differences would exist between imported JDM replacement used engines.

The core short block motor is pretty much identical, just the stuff bolted to it is different.
'96 was the big revision. Aluminum cross over pipe (also known as the Efini Y-pipe) and the "black box" under the intake manifold instead of all the solenoids.
Next revision was '99, and I'm not sure of any major changes on the motor itself that would stick out. The biggie would be finding a 280hp '99+ engine with the revised turbos, but you really have to look at the turbos themselves to tell. Not all '99s had the revised turbos, BTW.
The '92-95 motors are all fundamentally the same. The very early ones had a silver-painted plastic crossover pipe and silver painted throttle body elbow. A little later they went to a black crossover pipe, then by '94 the elbow was also unpainted black. Also in '94 they got rid of the chrome nuts holding the upper intake manifold on. But, that's all cosmetic - the engines and components themselves are all the same.

One thing about a 93 motor is that if you're going to use it without rebuilding it, I would change out the LIM gasket. You want the black-rubber coated layered metal gasket, not the early type paper one. The 94+ motors had the metal gasket out of the factory.
While that hardly makes a 93 an engine to avoid, I would change that gasket even if my goal was to simply get a working used engine installed fast.

I was having troubles finding out how to see easily the differences. Most of the JDM import engines come without the "elbow". Knowing the crossover pipe was also painted silver will help differentiate.
I am guessing that the change in the type IV engines (96+) to the black box / solonoids would also make them harder to install (Wiring loom changes etc, ECU change (Although I have a PFC..I have the early version))
By the sounds of it a type II or type III engine should suit me well as a cheap replacement
(I melted my block...absolutely nothing salvageable from the internals..bolts ons are fine, but I needed new housings / rotors / eccentric shaft / end plates and bearings!!)

Do a search on black box - there's some threads out there with pics. It's QUITE different, but no one in the US has figured out how to retrofit it, and it likely wouldn't be worth the hassle. I actually prefer the single solenoid setup - if a solenoid fails, you can test it and replace it separately, not have to throw out the ENTIRE box and get another one - and finding another one would be REALLY tough.
