A/C Pulley Replacement

Ok, so I definitely have a bad a/c pulley...however, I can't get the actual pulley off. I got the front face off, with the small 10mm bolt. When trying to pull the pulley off of the spline, it won't come off. The bearings are shot and the pulley was wobbling.

All i want to do is replace the one part and can't fine exactly how to remove the pulley ONLY. Shop manual doesn't shed any light on the situation either. I'd rather not go pulling around, so I figured I'd search here, no cigar...any hints?

I have a 93 R1.

How about something like a steering wheel puller? Or a harmonic dampener puller? You can rent them at a local auto parts store.

You might have to use a gear pulley and make it come off.

perhaps, but i'm thinking there is some snap ring inside the pulley and around the main spline.

thoughts? there isn't exactly enough room to get a steering wheel puller in there.

Your thinking might be correct. Once you figure it out, you won't need any pullers, as it comes apart easily. And don't lose the shims that space out the hub.

The 10mm bolt holds the hub on. The hub should just pull off...it might need a good yank if it has rusted to the shaft. There's a snap-ring that holds the bearing and pulley on the nose of the compressor. Once the snap ring is off, it should just slide off.

well, i took the snap ring out and the movement/play in the pulley is still the same as it was with the snap ring in...and the pulley still won't come out.

i find it odd that there isn't a writeup about this in the shop manual and it just says "replace compressor" and nothing about the a/c clutch itself.

though i didn't have much time to dork with it today, i'll mess with it again tomorrow...any feedback or suggestions are appreciated.

summary: front face nut taken off...a/c clutch plate face off, snap ring within pulley off...PULLEY NOT OFF. argh.

THis is the pulley on the compressor or the idler puley?
I have not replaced an AC compressor on a 3rd gen but on other cars the rebuilt compressor came with the pulley/clutch. Since the clutch is an item that wears out it does not seem like something you would want to reinstall onto a new or rebuilt compressor.

this is the pulley ON the compressor. the compressor is fine...the a/c clutch is bad. hence me wanting to throw on a new clutch/pulley.

ok, so i finally got it out. simple extraction really...for anyone who needs to know in the future...

HERE IS HOW TO REMOVE THE A/C CLUTCH PULLEY:

as stated above, remove the 12 or 10mm face bolt (forget which size)
-pull off pulley face
-remove snap ring on the inner side of the pulley
*part i didn't get until now: - get a/c clutch remover tool as shown below
Click the image to open in full size.
-this allows the pulley to come right out.
-remove snap ring on the magnet
-pull out magnet and disconnect wires (i cut them and will replace with the new wires the new pulley comes with)

DONE.
