blue smoke WOT

Just completely finished my non sequential conversion. Now I go out and of course check my boost. Well, it was boosting 6-8 psi and I can hear a boost leak somewhere but that is minor right now. ;p

The big problem is the smoke. When I got WOT it blows, and I mean BLOWS blue smoke everywhere. I boosted past one of my friends in his 2.slow jetta and he said he turned on his windshield wipers he was so confused by the smoke cloud. I have no idea of how many miles are on the turbos, but there is 103k on the chassis and 3k on the engine. My friend in the jetta said it smelled sort of like "...a new engine that was being broken in....it had a weird smell.." oil pressure seems okay, in the cabin I can smell a pretty strong fuel smell when I go under boost.....no smoke on startup either ...any ideas?

Did you disconnect the oil line(s) when you did the non-seq.?? Didn't think you'd have to. If you did, check he two return lines (gravity drop) that connect to the bottom of the block.

Well, if your sig is accurate, I'm guessing you blew the motor.

Intake and full exhaust on the stock ecu with no boost control? Naughty, naughty.

you can just pull the codes and see what's the problem. Maybe you just blew your turbos. Happend to me, and I had a lot of blue smoke. Smelled like oil cooking.

Boosting at 6 psi for 3 hours(with an occasional "spike" to 8 psi) can pop a wankel? I have a major boost leak.

I think blown turbos sounds more like it. I have been hearing some weird noises coming from the twins anyway (when it was running). After boosting for a couple minutes once I let it warm-down and it sounded like a damn fire was cackling around my turbos scared the bajeezus out of me, turned out to be oil sizzling. I am going to pull some codes and hope for the best I guess.

Could be, depending on how large that boost leak is...you could have been spinning those turbos to hell, while they're trying to push 10lbs through the engine, you could have had 15lbs blowing to the atmosphere.

I'm pretty sure it's a coolant leak. My friend with a 94 FD has the exact same problem. Right when he started his engine and started to accelerate, all this blue smoke came from the exhaust. and it was ALOT! He took it to a shop and he found that it was a coolant leak.... might wanna check it out.

how would a coolant leak cause a puff of blue smoke? are you sure it was blue?

That boost leak is the only thing saving your engine. You cannot run those mods on a stock ecu without a boost controller and/or a ported wastegate. Replace the midpipe with a stock or hi-flow cat and get a boost controller before you fix your boost leak. Otherwise you can add a new engine to your repair list.

I was going to throw on ye olde home depot boost controller ASAP, this weekend actually. It is definitely blue smoke either oil or fuel, it is definitely NOT coolant. The engine is still under warranty so that is a plus. As for the turbos I was going single anyway, but not for a while. I was actually planning on driving it on very low boost until i got the money for the single (which is around September). I guess I am just going to have to get a trailer and tow it down to the closest rotary shop (3 hours away). Maine sucks. ;/

Ohh, and btw Rynb I have a highflow cat I can slap on, to be safe also.

I think it is going to be an interesting conversation when you tow it in, with the rats nest reconfigured and your intake and exhaust mods, then ask for warrantee work.

The engine core itself is under warranty, there is no labor warranty I am not too worried about that anyway. If it comes down to getting a new engine I can just throw it in myself. YOu guys are such pessimists.

welp, after looking over the rex a little bit i realized that i never put on my midpipe! its sitting in my garage, haha...so the highflow cat is currently still on there.

what other sensors are there that can cause a check engine light to come on, other than all the rats nest ones?
