Who makes the best rebuilt motor?
Yeah I know. It's been up before but not when I needed a motor. THe warrentee company is balking at the job and I may have to foot the bill. IN that case screw the mazda reman.
Who makes the best motor for the price KD? RSR? Ivan? M2?
What did you pay for your rebuilt?
What about silcone orings? After market Apex seals?
Who does the best street port?
Mostly intested in the first two questions. THe rest is gravy.

I was just at Rotary Power in Gardena, CA (310-516-9959). They specialize in rebuilding rotaries and have been doing it since the early 80's. It's a small shop, but they really know their stuff.... the guy that owns it also runs a machine shop and does all the machining for the rebuilds himself - he's really good at it (I was told he has made the cams for the Cosworth indy car engines at the same shop). People have come from all over the US to get their engines built by him... Ari from Rotary Performance (rx7.com) recommends this shop for rebuilds.
They do 3mm apex seals, porting, turbos, you name it... prices are dependant on what you want done. He gave me the impressiong that it's anywhere from $2K on up.... he's built 1000hp racing motors, and he's done simple rebuilds with all stock parts - so prices can really vary.

NEVER get a Hayes Youll get what you paid for allright
im with RPNW.org we have more than a dozon complaints
about his motors.I will say that some of them were replaced
but it should be done right the first time!
Go to Pineapple Racing he also has a better warrenty & it will be done right the first time not 2,3,4th try....

I second that... NEVER go to Hayes. They built two 3mm ceramic apex seal all-out motors at the same time, one for me and one for another customer. The other one was run first and grenaded before 500 miles. After Hayes failed to admit guilt and then failed to resolve the problem, Tri-Point disassembled the motor and said that the porting was the worst they'd seen and that the plates were junk. The rotors used were not '93-'95 rotors machined for 3mm seals, but instead '85 (?) rotors which originally came with 3mm seals... unfortunately the rotors need to be machined for the seals that are being installed, and they bound up, cracking two of the six, one in each rotor.
Based on these findings, we pulled apart my motor and found shoddy and incomplete porting (was charged for stage III street port and received less than half of what was promised), unmachined rotors (not my original rotors), plates that had been lapped so many times that the silicone O-rings that Hayes is so proud of had no place to go when the engine was torqued down, and split out the side. It would have overheated almost instantly if run, and they offer no warranty on their "race" motors, for all intents and purposes.
They agreed to fix the motor for the new owner (I had since sold it, having changed my mind and was going for a 20B at that time) if no one found out. Unfortunately he was a good friend of mine and I found out immediately, but kept quiet until they'd done the work. They would not let him inspect the motor in progress and kicked him out of the shop.
Dennis is the one who screws up the porting, and his son Don is the one who lies to you over the counter.
STAY AWAY FROM HAYES if you value your car at all. (3rd gen. specific... they seem to do "OK" with 1st and 2nd gen. NA motors, as far as I can tell... maybe they should stick to what they know)
[Edit] Forgot to mention. I gave them a ~5,000 mile 1995 motor with one bad housing and one bad rotor and they pocketed it and gave me ALL used parts in exchange. The other customer bought new housings and new rotors through Mazdacomp and they apparently pocketed those too, because his engine was also made entirely of used parts, from what I've heard.

Being from Palo Alto, I would think you would consider Rick's Rotary Perf, M2 and SR since they are all close. You could pop in and inspect the work.
I have heard good things about SR and Rick's before. Not heard either way on M2.
I am also interested in this topic since I know its only a matter of time.

Dave at KD is the man. Witness my recent dyno run w/the mods below, 12# boost, and NGK 11 Leading plugs. 321.4 peak rwhp and 256.0 peak rwt (dyno sheets up soon). I'll vouch for Dave at KD Rotary. He knows the 3rd gen like no other. he knows these engines. I've never met anyone who will let you watch him work on your car and teach you along the way. He explains everything and have heard nothing but great from EVERYONE that has been there. As for street-porting, Kim does most of the work and knows what she is doing. ErnieT just got a streetport from him - has the same mods as me (about) and just ran a 12.1 at 12 lbs of boost on non-seq. His engines put out great numbers and I can definitely vouch for his knowledge and would recommend him to anyone.

I've had my motor ported/rebuilt by Jeff McCall at Rotary Power also. He was quite friendly and eager to answer all of my many questions. I believe Abel Ibarra and Adam Saruwatari both had their motors done at Rotary Power also (can anyone confirm this? I remember reading this a while back in Turbo Magazine).
I've been running on Jeff's motor for 3 years now, and no problems as of yet.

I'm also near Rick's Rotary in the Bay Area..a talked to an acquaintance who got his engine ported there...said he paid close to 7000 dollars (holy ****!)...I'm sure Rick's know what their doing, but if this is indeed the real price, what a rip.

I highly recommend Pettit. They rebuilt my 93 Touring with 104K miles in April of 2000. Now, 16 months later I have 131K miles and it is just like the day I picked it up from them. They did the street port with 3mm seals. While I was there they were shipping motors out so if you're not near Fort Lauderdale you'd have to ship it or do like me, trailer it to them. I live near Atlanta and would still go there (600 + miles) to get anything serious done.

OK guys, I have a Hayes Street Port that was done 3 years ago. I have a friend down here who has a Hayes engine and refered me to Hayes at the time. I did plenty of research before deciding to go with Hayes for my rebuild. There was no KD Rotary at the time and Pettit was way overpriced for me at the time as well. Unfortunately, I was not on this Forum..(if it existed) and did not hear all the bad things about Hayes until my engine was already being worked on. Talk about shitting on myself hehe!! Anyway, I must have called Don about 5 times and told him about that I had been told to stay away from them for specific reasons. HOPEFULLY, he took into consideration that I was aware of some of the **** they do around there and took his time on my engine. I even told Don myself to make sure that my engine comes out OK. Not sure what good that did. Well, after having it installed FINALLY (ya know what I'm talkin about JACK C. ) I LITERALLY broke it in for a little over 3k miles!! No **** guys!!.....after hearing all of the horror stories and reading somewhere on an australian rotary website that a rotary engine isn't fully broken in until around 5k miles (something w/ an oil sealing issue??) I took my time and slowly broke it in! I didn't hit 7 psi. of boost and 7k RPM's until I was right at 3k miles. Then I had boost issues which I didn't address for another 500 miles which still kept me in the "Break in" mode. So, after 3500 miles and near 3 and a half months of driving I finally let it loose!! No, not a load...my engine .
Which now brings me to My Hayes street port. I have near 17k miles on it now and it absolutely runs Perfect!! I am getting a good (-) 19-20 psi. of vacuum with a smooth idle. Power is extremely noticeable in upper RPM's due to porting. Absolutely no excessive smoking or oil consumption. BUT, even with everything running fine....I am still wondering what the hell is inside my engine. After hearing all of the horror stories, I am wondering if my engine is just a Hayes Rotary ticking time bomb or if my numerous phone calls to Don just before they began building my engine really paid off?? I did ask Don at the time...."IF my engine were to go out" what would be the mileage or time frame. He responded that if a Rotary engine is to fail due to poor assembly or what not....it would happen within the first 500-1500 miles!! Well, I am way past that. Also, I have posted this question of Hayes reliability numerous times on the List and here on the forum and there actually ARE Hayes engines that are lasting well beyond 80k miles!! Who knows..... I guess time will tell. If this engine does go out again I will definitely go with RP or KD rotary.

I'd go Rotary Power myself. Jeff may be one of the most skilled people out there when it comes to rotory motors. His engines are ledgendary. Your in Cali, give them a call. You won't be sorry.

ivan is the only one who actually puts all the nuts and bolts back in their original holes. he also will not spray paint garbage and sell it for a motor, like well mazda and some others. rick is ok, he does better on the early stuff. call ivan hes the only one who has worked on the 3rd gen nonstop since it came out around here.

Visit Rick's rotary in pleasanton...he know plenty about the 3gen...not only they early stuff..as for $7K ..I dont think so..but you can always ask. He wont BS you either...I've watched him do plenty of work and he explains everything...Donovan recently had his motor done by rick...ask him about it.
