what is good quality paint?

Everyone I know says Maaco uses shitty paints. How do you know what is quality paint? What brands? I can probably get someone to paint my car for a couple hundred dollars if I supply the paint, but I wouldn't know where to look or whats good or not. Thanks alot.

Local auto paint shop's. Alot of the stuff you use to mix the paint and get it ready to spray is very volotile and not intended for no pro use, therefore you can't just buy the **** at wallmart, or a online store. (for the most part) Get out your wallet though, good dupont paint is VERY pricey, some of it is in excess of $500 a quart! And thats just the paint, nothing else.

You have alot to decide man, how far down are you taking the current paint? are you going to prime? what surfaces will you be priming, plasic, meta, alluminum? all takes different primers.

are you going single stage or base coat clear coat? what color are you going ... painting is no weekend project, it takes alot of prep and thought for it to come out halfway decent.

A real pro can get away doing a RX7 sized car on 1 quart, an amatuer, better off with a couple, or a gallon

also, who is doing this work? equipment has alot to do with it, HVLP gun or standard, need more paint for a standard gun, need more CFM for a HVLp gun, need a primer tip 1.7-2.0ish then you need tips for the paint 1.3-1.5ish ... make sure your compressor can keep up with the CFM consumption of your gun also.

I hope you intend to primer the whole car .. but. You can use a good self etching on the metal and alluminum if you get a primer designed for both, but you need a seperate primer for plastic, all plasitic. Plastic needs a flexable primer cause it expands and contracts with the temps alot more than does metal surfaces.

I use PPG DP-40 as my primer. K-36 as a primer-surfacer and then either PPG or Sherwin Williams for a topcoat.

www.paintucation.com has more in-depth info on this topic.

Ryde or die, I would also recommend the PPG paint, but don't use a clear coat, get a high gloss one. My uncle used that on his car and it is MAGNIFICENT!!!

Also how are you stripping the paint? The most important parts are stripping and primer...

About how much will a paint job run if you do all the prep work and they prime and paint it for you?? This would be a nice job, engine bay, door jams, etc.

most REPUTABLE shops will not touch a car they did not prep. Too many varables to contend with concerning capatibilty of primers/body fillers and surfacers

Paint and painting a car is the cheapest part, as lond there is not too many dents or dings, its the prep work of masking everything off that gets expensive, usually that is a good half the amount or more..
