Transmission Fluid in Airbox?

My friend just bought a 90' 7, to counter my 88 :P, and when we were checking over the engine compartment we took apart the air box to check the air filter, and in the front of the airbox there was some red fluid, looked and felt like transmission fluid, sitting in the plastics rivits.
The guy he bought it from said that 1 rotor had 0 compression, and by the sound of the vehicle when we started it up to take it on/off the car trailer I wouldn't doubt it.
Anyways my Q is what in the hell is this red fluid doing in his airbox? Could it have come from the airpump somehow (only thing I could think of).

hell, who knows how it got there...
its not normal, but i wouldnt really worry about that if one of the rotors has no compression

Sounds like a failed attempt of the ATF treatment.

Well from what I understand the guy wasn't too smart on things about Rotaries, but maby, the thing is there was no transmission fluid anywhere but at the bottom of the air box, not even residue in the MAF... if the MAF was dead, how would I know?

Is there a K&N filter in the car? Previous owner may have just poured the "recharge" oil right in the airbox without cleaning the filter. Maybe not but just a guess.

Ahh thats it! It has a K&N drop in
Thats a big releif, cause we were planning on having ATF Treatment maby help out the engine enough for us to get it running temporarily so he can race me... well I didn't mention racing me but I'm gonna make him do it anyways
