"So my car caught on FIRE Yesterday"

Part1 : What Happen

yesterday i decided to head down to my friends house to chill. on my way over to his house i knotice the shifter was a lil hotter then usual. smoke was comming from the shifter boot.

my heart stated to race.. Really bad.. as in my other 88GXL experiance a tear in the heater hose cause all pressureized coolant to expell out of the opening, which in turn cause the motor to run without coolant for a lil bit. white smoke came out of the shifter as did this incided. <- in this case i managed to turn the car off in time without having a over heated engine. (my eye's are perminately glued to the heater gauge in my ride after that incident)

I quickly Turn off the motor. and to my surprize the First instance i see a fire Flash jump through and touch the wiper blades.. HOLLY **** MY MOTOR IS ON FIRE!

i quickly coast my car to my friends house.. (out of pure coincidence i had already manage to travel all the way to about 2 houses away. and he see's my distress.)

i quickly pull into his empty drive way and even before i get there i scream, "GET THE FUCKEN HOSE!!!! MY CAR IS ON FIRE!!" He had a dumb found look "Dan Cook" would surmize, "ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR FUCKEN MIND?"

so i pull open the latch to the hood and pull it open.. a Swifer of heat decided to jump and Glaze itself on my face the sweat smell of gasoline and plastic still lingers on my clothing. my friend by that time had manage to get the hose by my side and Pour it's Godly H20 fury againsted the Searing motor. i think i had been pouring water on that engine for at least 3 minutes. took me a whole minute to put the fire out and to cool every melting piece of plastic. and another two untill i decided the motor was sprayed enough to the point that no respectable amount of gasoline would ignite.

me and my buddy laughed afterward. mostly because it were were really wet and it got sorta chill temp so we got a lil cold.

but overall were okay.

Part 2 : History

Okay so i bought the car about 1 month ago from a rotary head about a month ago i bought it 4/20 .. all it had by my understanding was an idle issues so i decided to adress that. in my neverending quest to improve my rotary i decided to pull the UIM from the LIM to change out the vacuum hoses. durring my travels i found a hose i could't get to unless i pulled the primary injectors. well like an idiot i didnt bag my screws or nuts.. so i was **** out of luck of getting the injectors to function properly. There is no mounting points what so ever in the injectors so i know it would be VERY unwise to run the car this way. in an enranged state i put the manifold on the ground slowly.. and Crack i broke a piece of the manifold enough to cause a leak air... ****!

so in a nutshell i had to Find and report the replacement nuts and bolts that are mising. and Source and purchass a used LIM. and Put everything back in myself. Or just send it out to a rotary mechanic who has all the parts already waiting there who'll do the work for you. i figured <----- i work 48+ hours a week and have a busy schedule bedroom excersing my female friends. i have no time to fucken do any of that. so i sent my car away to Rotary Reliablity in Fountin Valley. the damm place was excatly 4.1 miles away from my home. where i had been working on the car. Tow costed me $60

A reliable transportion is an absoulte must. since im phasing away from my SRT-4 to daily drive the 88 GXL. i deiced that the best way was to say, **** it. fix it and leave it so i can finish phasing out of the Front wheel drive. i still have my srt-4 so im not out of a ride. but im sure out of my rotary.

Louie one of the guys who works at Rotary Reliablity had called me and said my car was finished the next day. i had work unfortionteatly so i wasn't able to pick up the car untill monday. he was cool with that. over the phone he told me my bill was $420 <----ouch.. so i picked it up monday paid the man and went about my bussiness. i only had one quirk with the car and it was the bad idle. but louie manage to fix that accordingly. (the motor still had the idle problem but was only present durring start up. leading me to believe the wax sensor was messed up or something.)

i pick up my car on monday last week, only 10 DAYS as of yesterday! has gone by i mean only 10 DAYS later.. my car Commits Suicide. And the probelm is due to a fuel leak.

okay guys from what i can gather, this is not a PD fire.

in my previous RX7 the Pulsation Damper Went bad. i replaced it. That car had a fire too.. but a very MINOR fire had occured before i did.

I personally checked the pulsation Damper Before and After the repairs were made. the Pulsation damper was clearly functioning.

Part 3 : Restitution

So i decided to go to rotary reliablity in person and talk to louie about what happen. he in turn told me that. he checked everything. and made sure everything worked. he found no leaks or evedence that a leak can occur.

Obviously a leak occured anyways. all plastic pieces in the engine bay is totaled.. the harness is MELTED BEYOND EXISTANCE. Vaccum hoses Welded togeather. Copper color coats of smoke surround the engine bay from excess amount of heat.

yeah im Royally Fucked.. basicly. damm fire Totaled my car.

I went ahead and talked to the guys at From Rotary Reliablity. all i asked was, "Hey take care of me".

Louie Told me right away that he can't do anything untill he inspect the car and determins what was the cause of the fire. and he is unable to do that today. but tommarrow he plans on taking a personal inpsection. I'm good with that. as i do the same thing at my work. whenever a customer is un satsified.

I already took a look. and find myself to see that the Fire itself started below the UIM. but i don't plan on changeing anything untill he sees it in person. AS WELL AS INSPECTS IT infront of me. so im taking off work so i can Diagnose the problem with him.

Now all i got to determine if it's worksmanship Defect or Mechanical Faliure.

You do not want to use water to put out an automotive fire(unless you have no other choice). If the fire is electrical in nature, H20 will not help. Best of luck fixing the car, and remember-halon is your friend!

MY SS clutch line caught on fire when i did my transmission swap. I didnt ground it properly to the engine and it used the SS line as a ground and it caught on fire but nothing as serious as ures.

I can only imagine what it will be like if the engine was on fire , frigging crazy.

Yah, Just thought of that?
I had a little starter fire scene, nothing big, but I went to wallmart for some nice size Fire Extinguisher that I carry all the time.

I also do a "drill" hahaha to see how fast I can snap out the bottle, pull the latch. pop the hood aaaaannd Spray Away!!!!!..... in "like" less than 5 secs. lol..

BTW, Sorry about your engine fire. It always sucks.

LAN - well after my friends and i laughed, i grabbed some ciggerettes out of my side pocket of the car.. and well. smoked them.. and i said, "Dude what kind of bullshit is this?"

I also said some other stuff i choose not to say, here on the forums.

as for using water as a source of bringing down a fire.. I know all too well that water isn't the best to use when your dealing with a liquid fire. but i had no other alternitive. Why do you think i sprayed the engine bay for 3 full mintues.. i was afraid it could spark up again. i mean the even water/gas mixture falling onto the headers will still ignite. so i just wanted to make sure there was no way fire could come out again. I MEAN COME ON, WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO EQUIP OUR CARS WITH FIRE EXTENGISHERS.

also i like to stress... this isnt a Pulsation Damper fire. I checked it before and after it went to the shop. Louie from R&R Checked it.

I don't want to talk smack on R&R. they have done a great job on my other rx7. i had no problems when i let them service that car. They've done some Great work For all of the Rotary community.

i just think.. they flat out fucked up fixing this paticular ride. in any case.. the car is probably going to get parted out REGARDLESS. the exteriour of the car still looks immaculate. but there is quite alot of damage in the engine bay for me to cover the costs. unless i plan on doing a full engine swap including some plastic pieces here that are non engine related. i don't see how this is an eazy alternitive.. the Main Harness is melted Beyond.. whatever.. All plastic pieces are Goudy.

but i have to wait to see what my option are..

the main reason we have engine fires in our rotary is due to breaking PD.. i Highly Doubt a PD Coincedentally broke within it's 10 days of it being out of the shop, 10 days of me NOT smelling gas while i was cruising around town (and my other car PD leaked so i know the smell). 10 days Good GAS mileage. average 23-25 miles per gallen around town some hwy. im sure i would of Kinda knotice. but i didnt.

but im sure Rotary Reliabiltiy will take care of this situation.

sucks to hear about your 7 man...

check the fuel lines if you still can. when mine caught fire, cracked and split fuel lines leaking fuel onto the turbo manifold started the fire. she burned for only a few seconds, enough to cook the engine harness, vac lines, fuel lines, ...

So have I, I wouldn't drive without one. I just recently switched over to a Safecraft RS fire system (halon). Now I just pull the cable and run like hell!
