Trany Wires

Hi I just had a new clutch put in my 87 t2 the guy that put it in cut the wires that go to the trany because he could not get them apart, Now he don't remember where they go. He's got the reverse light on all the time and the car idles like crap and just runs rough, I don't know if that has anything to do with running rough and idling bad but I know the reverse light should not be on all the time. Could someone please tell me the colors of the wires that go to each other like for instance I don't no the colors but like the red on the harness side to the green on the switch side. I guess I need it for both reverse switch and the neutral switch. any help will be appreciated. Thanks

Check the FSM in the FAQ. It should have wiring diagrams in there. I'd go out to my car and check, but it's dark out.

I did check but I don't understand how to read the diagram. that why I ask for the colors of the wires, so I can hook them up the right way. Thanks

I did a seach and came across this by Icemark but does'nt say if it for a s4 na or turbo ,can someone tell me if it for a 87 t2

There are three switchs on a manual tranny...

Neutral safety = Grn/Blk, and Black (the black goes to ground). The wires will have continuity when the transmission is in the middle section of the H shift pattern (neutral).

5th gear = Blk/Blue, and again Black (and again Black goes to ground). To test there will be continutity between the two wires when the transmission is in 5th gear. The switch is sometimes called the "over the Top switch".

and finally
Reverse = Black/Yel and Red/green. The black/yellow is 12V+ in when the key is on. Again to test when the car is in reverse, (and the key is off) there will be continuity.

The nice thing about these switches is that you can wire them up backwards and they will still work, you just have to make sure that the correct wires are going to the correct switch, rather than the correct wires are going to the correct position on the correct switch.

Test to find the reverse solinoid on the trans based on what you have there. Basically check for continuity on the wires when it is in reverse and not in another gear. That one will be your reverse. Then unplug some wires you have connected until your reverse lights go out and then connect the right wires so that they come on when its in reverse.

If i remember correctly the reverse solinoid is the one on the left of the trans and has to male connectors on it. It points straight out inline with the trans. the other solinoids are the neutral and fith gear switch. I can look tonight and give you a better guess when I look at one of my trans' I have in the garage...

The car idles like crap and just runs rough. Would any of those wires have anything to do with that. Because it wasn't like that before the clutch job was done. Also can you tell me what color wire on the harness side go's to what colors on the switch side. I'm not to good with meters but I can match up color pretty good LOL. Its pretty tough laying under the car trying to figure it out so the easier you can make it for me the better it will be. Thanks
