Hi All,
Here's a wildass question for all of you rotary boyz. My wife & I just bought a '88 RX-7 'vert. It runs really well. Especially above 4K. Really fun. We've had it for a week now. My wife LOVES IT!!! Now, I've been a 914 lover for years. I drive a '73 - 914 that Irebuilt to a 2165 stroker, aftermarket injected, 140 hp. Electronic ignition, Sachs performance clutch pack, lightened flywheel & I've upgraded the suspension.
So she comes home from work & says, "My car will kick your cars A$$." I said, " Maybe from zero to 50 but, bring it on baby, first one to the Big Bear Mountain Dam turnoff wins.
Yeah, she has more power than me. But, absolutely NOTHING handles like a well prepared 914. When we get to the tight twisties thru Running Springs, I'm gonna show her my tail lights for about a minute, and then she will wonder where I went, 'cause I'm gonna be so far ahead of her she won't even see me.
I'll order breakfast before she parks. Think I'm wrong???

My dad raced 914/6's and /4's the handeling is insane, however an RX-7 coupe will hold its own, with aftermarket suspension mods, the RX-7 could keep up with a 914, but a vert has a lot more weight to make up for the roof not being there as a support, so it might take a rather skilled driver to keep pace with a 914 in a vert

I believe that the 50/50 weight distribution of my 914, complemented by the much lower certer of gravity than the 7, will make even my Grandma faster in my teener than in a 7- except maybe an experienced RX-7 pilot. When the rear-end of the 7 unweights U had better know how to react. Reminds me of 911's. When my teener unweights thru transition, it's always the inside front tire... and that's FUN!!! Don't get me wrong; I need to get aquainted with this "new" (to us) 7 car. I really enjoy the way it sings it's song. Unfortunately, (for me) I don't know dick about rotary engines. So, I've got a lot of reading to do. Anyway, my wifes happy with the car & I don't have to share my teener. win/win!!!

50/50 weight in the 914??? Hmmm I always heard that they were 43/57...

And a road race really is not an auto cross...(and perhaps even questionable safety wise).

Two years back I helped a friend drop a S4 13BT into a 914, now that was a fast car.

Call up Racing beat. Order their anti-sway bar and springs package, and some good shocks while your at it(KYB AGXs, Koni yellows, whatever) and have them send along their header, pre-silencer, and cat-back exhuast and I think the vert will hold it's own. Or just try running a stone stock GTUs then your breakfast would be cold by the time you caught her. But then, I'm a little bias and don't know as much about 914s as I do about FCs.

Anyway you look at it good work at keeping a classic porsche alive.

havin watched both at my local autoX club, I can say the 914 will destroy an N/A vert or coupe.
I haven't seen how a TII does but I don't think that it would stand much of a chance either, remeber the 914 weighs about 1000 pounds less than a FC

dude my dads race prepped 914/4 weighed in at 1935, and your street prepped 914 is 1800?, and the RX-7 has a 49.5 to 50.5 weight distribution, the 914 isn't nearly that close, its something like 44 to 56, the lower center of gravity is one of its advantages, also how short and wide it is helps it

In auto-x, one of the lightweight RX-7's will keep up just fine. Get some suspension on it with some decent tires, and the 7 will be ahead.

i cant believe 9 saw 914 in the title on this thread. im rebuilding one as we speak, its a 73 1.7 but id like to put a 13b in it. they really do weigh nothing
me and my dad can pick up the body and move it. Theres nothing on it thought, cept for the wheels and suspension parts.

Awesome!!! I didn't expect this. I'm a total nubie here - but - a 13B into a 914? I've seen the obvious: V-8, V-6, "real" 6, even a corvair!!! But a rotary? Nope. Is there a link to a conversion kit? Sounds like fun. Hummmm, then there's that damn radiator thing again...

So I wanna know more. Like, how much does a 13B weigh - conversion kit - with a cooling system???
BTW, I previous said teeners had 50/50 weight dist. I was wrong. Stock '73 2 Liter weight distribution, 46.3% front and 53.7% rear. Until you hit the brakes... Pretty damn close. If you haven't driven one, please do. Closest thing I've found to driving a "legal" slot car on the street.

The conversion kits are pretty simple and bolt up to the standard Volkswagon transaxles. It was a common upgrade for VW powered Sand Rails/dune buggys, so of course with the kit it bolted right up to the 914 transaxle. Custom motor mounts had to be fab'd however. You might want to post in the Other Rotary section to get more details.

I thought the 13B short block is around 220, long block with everything (air/power steering/etc) around 320 but Kevin (Rotary Resurrection) would know for sure.
