i searched and didnt come up with anything. I used a 3/4 impact to zap the flywheel nut right off, but how do i torque it down to 350ft lbs? there are numerous posts about people getting the flywheel off without the stopper but i havent seen anything about how people get it torqued back down. the impact gun is like 800ft lbs so i dont want to break anything. maybe i could buy an electronic torque wrench thing and watch the readout til its 350? or is there another way to do it? share with me what you guys have done

Torque the nut to 150 Ft-LBS after applying Loctite. Now make a mark on one of the apexes of the nut. Move to the right one apex, and make a mark on the flywheel. Now bang on the nut with the impact until the marks line up.

Put a breakover on the nut. Mark where one foot is on the breakover bar. Find someone who weights approx 175lbs. Have him stand on the end of the breakover at the one ft mark. Done. Well, you might bounce once or twice on it.

Or rent a torque wrench from the Autostore or rental outfit.

how do u keep the flywheel from moving without the fancy tool?i have a torque wrench, just wasnt sure how to keep it from moving becuase i just used a big 3/4 impact to zap it off in a couple seconds.

Wouldn't that only be 175 ft/lbs?

I say, put 100 pounds of force on 3.5 feet of breaker bar.

I helped a friend with an engine a few years ago. What we did is snug the nut and take it to a tire shop that advertised servicing trucks and busses (after calling first). For 5 bucks the tech spun the nut on using there impact wrench and torque stick. We actually had the flywheel lock tool, just didn't have a torque wrench which went high enough. I remember thinking I couldn't believe they had a torque stick that went up that high.

i custom made a .250 thick bar that bolts to the flywheel to keep it from turning while i torque it down. Now thats genious

I'm a bit slow on all kinds of "word description", so I drew this "Master piece" out to ask you guys if Im understanding this "correctly.




I will need to :

Torque the center nut at 150 ft lbs using my beam torque Wrench, draw a line and that's the "MARK 1" on the nut.

then at the next Apex/corner of the nut, draw another line "MARK 2" on the flywheel.

then use breaker bar/impact/whatever I can to move "MARK 1" to "MARK 2" which is around 60 degrees and I'll be at 350 ft lbs ?

I just wanna be 100% sure I'm understanding this correctly, cuz incorrect torque on the flywheel nut = flies out and cut my leg or just take my life, that won't be fun.

excuse my drawing! I stole my nephew's crayons to finish this "project" ...


Also, on the FSM it saids

"Apply thread locking compound to the threads of the Eccentric shaft," sure, I will put some Locitite Red on it.
*the engine I was rebuild has no Locitite on the big locknut* ... *shurgs*

but the next line it saids "Apply sealant to the contact surface of the locknut"

Hmm? I don't think I seen anybody do that, does that mean I should put some silicone on the contact (I assume it means the FLAT side) of the lock nut ?
