The alternator has diodes in it (electrical check valves) which allow the current to flow out of the alternator when it is charging. Unfortunately, they also allow current to flow through the alternator when the battery is connected backwards.
I can draw you a schematic, but I think that any further attempts on my part to explain will result in confusion (mostly on my part.)

you can tell me anything out want about electricity, but the alternator still only charges the battery and keeps the car running, the battery starts the car though
without the battery the starter cant crank the engine, so if the altenator went the car should, at least for a while, crank until the battery dies

Simple, This is why the main fuse or alternator fuse would blow if the battery were to be connected backwards (basically a dead short in the alternator.) Fortunately for him, the main fuse blew, protecting the rest of the electronics.
As to the leak 'moving inside' I would attribute this to the heater core (which was probably damaged by the excessive effort that was required to remove the hose.)

wow the same thing happend to me today. battery was dead. switched out a new one. terminals are both red from previouse owner thought i put it in right but it was dark at 24 hr autozone so turned it on n blew my main fuse. replaced it with a 100a fuse because thats all they had. main fuse is 80a so i need to find one asap just parked it when i got home but now my stereo dont turn on or my door lights and top lights in the cabin. so gotta figure out if i blew a fuse from there. anybody know any fuses that would fix those lights.
