i have a factory mazda black key for my 89 vert...it came with a second key that looks to me to be a remake. my door and ignition tumblers are pretty loose(i can insert the key and while its being turned, i can pull either key out of the tumbler, about half way, and it will function properly with only half the key in.) i know mazda has loose keys because i once had a first gen,82, and about 2 years later my buddy got a crappy 79. i dont know why i thought of it, maybe cuz the keys looked so closely matched...anyways i just so happened to be able to use his car with my key!! not to mention that with my car i could start it and then take the key out and put it in my pocket..could i beat out a dui like that? no key in the ignition no intent to drive(by law)!!??

other than maybe bad key cutting....for the vert was there a key that opens doors but not start the car....maybe a trunk specific key?

just curious, i know mazdas policy on selling tumbler assemblies with keys. plus i bought the car used so just thing maybe there is something goofy?

New, the FC came with 2 standard black plastic round head keys and a metal Valet key (except for the 10AE which came with 2 square plastic standard keys and a square metal valet key).

If the lock cyl are so worn that you can remove the key without turning it you should replace it. The fact that one key works and an almost identical doesn't suggestes that the key cyl is very worn. All the key regardless of valet or normal status opened the doors and turned on the ignition. The valet keys just didn't unlock the glove box, hatch/trunk, and storage bins (if equipped). Sounds like you need to get a couple of new keys cut as well as replacing the lock cylinders.

You might also try and use a 92+ key like the efini key as it is slightly thicker and might hold better.

Mazdatrix has the lock cyl for the series 5 cars.

No, you could not beat a DUI be removing the key and still have the engine running or car on. DUI falls under the intent to operate the car. If anything is on in the car, you are operating the car.

#2 IMO, you should never be driving while under the influence at all anyway, and if you do I hope they catch you; lock you up and fine you so heavy that your *** bleeds for the next 10 years. Trying to get out of it is even more lame. Don't you have the ***** to stand up and take your punishment if you have done something wrong???, But again that is just my opinion.

Sorry, but I agree w/ Icemark in regards to the DUI reference.

Anywayz, also, what may have happen is the individual tabs which comprise of the locking mechanism may have gotten stuck. Take some dry graphite lube and put a little bit in the lock. See if that will remedy the situation. The graphite lube is easily found at Automotive specialty shops like Pep Boys or Kragen.

In Minnesota "intent to drive" is irrelevant under DWI law. All the the state needs to show is that you were in physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence. This means that you are guilty even if you are sitting in the passenger seat, the car isn't running, you're sleeping,and the keys in your pocket. I know you were joking, but I figure since I don't have any ideas about the key problem I'd share my legal expertise. Who said two and a half years of law school is useless. Peace.

i as well agree with the dui soapbox..there are some interesting laws regarding how you can be charged.

as for my keys yes the black works all around just the metal one doesnt start the car.
