I'm changing out a clutch for a buddy of mine. He's got a rx8. As I'm looking for his parts, I noticed mazdatrix.com sells a new bolt with their flywheel and clutch setup.

I'm changing his to a lightened flywheel and clutch, of course the counterweight added too. Do they require a new bolt or something?

Since I'm posting, what size was that nut again, i remmeber it was like 2 1/16" or 2 1/8" or something. Anyone know the torque spec off the top of their head?

I'm real tempted to buy the flywheel stopper tool instead of just impacting the crap out of that huge nut

I don't know about the new bolts, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.

The nut is 2 1/8"

You can make a stopper out of a 10mm wrench I think, or some chain. Much cheaper.

I see a hardware kit that they sell, which looks to have 6 bolts for the pressure plate or maybe the counterweight, but I don't see a "flywheel bolt". The "bolt" that the flywheel nut threads onto is the eshaft.

The bolt kits are for attaching the pressure plate to the flywheel and the counterweight to the new aftermarket flywheel; the stock ones have the counterweight built in. The bolts for the pressure plate should be replaced with the clutch. They aren't all that expensive and it's worth the sound of mind.

You should actually have something Stopping the Flywheel from Moving when taking it off,or you aren't using the full capabilities of the Air Impact to get the Nut off.(think about it.).
I used a Piece of chain stuck to one of the PP bolts and the other end was To a Bolt on the Rear Iron..Tighten the "lash" up,so that the Flywheel won't move further,and ZIP!.( well for me is was actually ARGH!.Yess!.I had a breaker bar 42" long,.It came off effortlessly).

No, I'm actually talking about the big 2 1/8 nut that holds the counterweight. I was just wondering, thought maybe it was a torque to yield nut, or best used once and thrown away after. I reused the one on my t2, but the mazdatrix website made it seem like they replace it after each use because they sell it in their kit.

Also I was thinking there was a thickness difference in the nuts when you switch from oem rx8 flywheel to the lightened aftermarket one. I'm pretty sure there isn't , but I was just double checking

it holds on the flywheel...the counterweight bolts to the flywheel with 6 small bolts as already stated.

Flywheel nut. Thread locker on eccentric shaft threads, gasket sealant to flange of nut that goes against the flywheel. 290-360 ft-lb torque, checked in FSM.

Not completely off-topic: Saw a big *** torque wrench the other day at Princess Auto, which is similar to Harbour Freight over there in the states. I'd consider 'renting' one for a day if you want to get the torque accurate.

well technically the big nut holds on the counterweight, and the counterweight is then bolted to the aftermarket flywheel with 6 small bolts, the nut doesn't actually touch the flywheel...

^ That is of course, speaking technically here, you are bolting to an as stated aftermarket flywheel.

A stock flywheel will have the nut touching it.
