Only one of the FD stationary gears is hardened (which one?)

It's adviseable to upgrade your 20B and RE stationary gears to FD (which one, or both?)

Essentially, should I be replacing both stationary gears in my Cosmo 13B (I've heard I only need to change the rear one out) and if so, are there other changes that are necessary? Do the REW thrust bearings and the REW's front counterweight need to be used in conjunction with the FD's stationary gears?

Thanks in advance. I'm not sure what ever happend to me just wanting to throw this motor in temporarily...curiosity got the better of me I guess :-)

I wouldn't worry about the gears unless you are planning on reving the **** out of the thing.
the counter weights have nothing to do with gears.
they balance the rotors and shaft only.

The FD's are hardened and it's a good idea to replace both. Found the info elsewhere. I'm aware of the counterweight not having anything to do with the gears in terms of balance (that's why they're stationary gears :-) but the way everything fits together may require use of the FD's counterweight and thrust bearings, similar to what you would have to do if updating a TII motor to FD stationary gears.

Both the FD gears are hardened! (would not be much point in doing only one)

Some T2's had Hardened gears but i dont know what year (i guess the later ones).

Go with a set of FD's the Ft one is a little diffrent and will need all the Thrust bearings etc but its not rocket science.

Its not only high revs that kill them its Power as well.

You do not want a gear going on you at any rev's.

I have never seen a gear fail at low rpms,,,
for that matter I have never seen a gear fail.
as far as I remember I thought the Torrington
bearings were the same on all the 13b's, the ones in the 20b
are bigger, have not bothered to measure them
but they look bigger, maybe I will look tonight.

What sort of power have you been Looking at? if you are only looking at 300bhp you can run what ever you want but a triple is capable of 700-800bhp and thats a lot of force on those Gears.

As for the Rew Gears its not the Main Bearing size, its the Thrust assembly etc at the Ft thats diffrent (bigger and more meaty)

I dont know anyone that would build an engine for power and not replace the Gears with Hardened ones.

Its just FD Gears are alot better designed (all hardened) and theres no hit and miss of geting T2 hardened ones and you get the bigger Thrust bearings etc.

Gotcha. Thanks for the input. I'm realistically looking at 450+ on pump gas. I've found used front/rear gears so I'm good to go!
