Tapered dowels - which way around?!

It was mentioned in one of my other threads by someone that there are tapered dowels in the engine. Now I have it all apart and cleaned I can clearly see one set of dowels steps down to a smaller diameter at one end. Please can someone confirm which housing these should go in and which iron the small end of the dowel should fit to?
Thank you
Lee
