hey guys, I just got my car back from a shop who installed a sump fuel tank in the trunk and cleaned up some wiring. the garage now always smells like I spilled a gallon of gasoline. nothing is visibly leaking, but the smell is pretty horrendous.. keep in mind I'm out in desert and indoor temperature in the garage can go up to 120-130*F.

is this normal with sump tanks? my emission hoses are to atmosphere but i can't image them releasing so much gasoline vapor. thanks for your input.

Its your vent to atmosphere for sure!

When swapping to the 20b, I deleted the charcoal junk and vented to atmosphere. It doesn't smell in the spring/winter but now that its summer I cannot park it in a house garage or it will smell up the whole house! Gasoline at atmospheric pressure actually begins to boil near 130F!

So, why vent to atmosphere? What are the advantages over keeping the stock charcoal cannister system? Will the cannister system not work with a 20B setup?

thanks guys. i kept the charcoal can but it's that emission hose from the charcoal can that's supposed to go back to the solenoid on the intake pipe that I just kept open (I have no where to connect it). it may be an rx8 thing... if I close it with a plug, when I put gasoline in the car, the gas pump cuts out every second, so I think that's the only vent hole. i'll put a pressure valve on it see if that helps.

btw, according to my fuel gauge, I lost approximately 1/4 of tank just by sitting in the garage in the past 7 days!!

I didn't realize how bad it would smell to run to atmosphere

Yea my car mysteriously looses gasoline too, all of it evaps over the weeks

I left mine alone. No gas smells and the fuel tank stays pressurized just like stock.

Where did you hook up your gasoline vapor return hose to? the vapor hose coming out from the charcoal canister. When I block it off, the gas pump keeps shutting off when I'm refueling..

I think it runs to a plastic little expansion chamber and then from the expansion chamber via vacuum line into the intake manifold

Well I don't know what you need to do with your 8 but with my fd, I just disonnected the rubber line off the hard line in the rear because I use that hard line for something else. So I guess mine is just vented. I dont get gas smells at all then again, my car hasn't been garaged since I lost my shop last year. It sits in a car port now. Maybe the fumes has something to do with those 2 check valves on top of the fuel pump mounting plate?

yea if I leave it out, it doesn't smell. the wind quickly take it away. Indoor garage temp gets to the gasoline boiling temperature in some places like monster had mentioned, so I'm effectively boiling off gasoline with an open hole in an enclosed unvented space lol. My gas boiler is luckily in a separate garage in the other side of the house, but I could imagine this can potentially be pretty dangerous!

^Well I guess you could put a NC electric 12 volt solenoid on that vent that closes when the car is off. Then while your fueling, you can leave the key on so the solenoid stays energized to vent while you fill the tank?
