Looks like you basically have a mechanically stock survivor. A few cosmedic things have been changed out, to include the FB wheels and seats. It has 79 arm rests and has been painted at least once. All the badges have been shaved off and the trim molding removed.

Not necessarily bad things, at least someone cared enough to work on it. You need to decide if you want to bring it back stock, modified or (most likely) somewhere in between, and to what level of detail that satisfies you and your pocketbook. Like Stu said, start with the fluids and big things like brakes, fuel and cooling system and work your way through to the finer details as time and money permit. Its like polishing a gem stone, start coarse and work finer and finer.

Lol banzai, I've never heard that one, being like a gem stone, start course then finer. But it is true though. Correct me it I'm wrong but isn't that the same color as the anniversry x cars?

looks like the engine has been painted before, the rotor housing look gold. I have a non cut up radio panel if you're looking, could let er go cheap.

All fluids just got changed, except for tranny, doing that next. Carb need tuning bad. But this thing isn't going to be stock. Sorry guys who like original. It's going to be completely stock on outside. But y motor is going to be a raped ape, on rocket fuel. Hope you guys are with me on this one cuz I'm not scared. It's going to be driven for about 5000 miles or less stock so I can get familiar with the engine and how it likes to be treated. Then I'm RIPPING IT ALL APART, hehe. Don't worry guys. Not before I get ALL parts first.I'm going to go crazy at junk yards and shops gitting parts ready for the rebuild. I rather have a motor ready to plug in when I take old one out. I just makes sence. I dont want my baby sitting too long

I will do everything in my power to make use of stock parts from other rx7's to make power in the motor. I really like finding rare old racing parts for old japs cars and ACTUALLY using them. Unlike other people who like to stare at race mods sitting in an old box. Seen it too many times, it makes me sad

i looked for it when i posted and it's not where i thought it was.. could be in the attic or the shed. I know i didn't just get rid of it, but it was years ago since it's been pulled from a car. Knowing me I sold it and forgot about it lol I'll keep looking.

Thanks for looking for the face plate for me its the one of many small cosmetic issues this Mazda got on inside. Infact here are some more inside pics of gear colloum for shifter. It's gold plated that trim has seen some better days ill say that, lol

I have heard that the driver side foot rest is special on wiki. Not a very trusted site but referance non the less. Anyhoo, head you had to check a box on custom order slip in 79 to have Hiroshima factory install one for American release GS? True?

I mean mine is an 06/80 manufacture date on sticker in door. That is usually odd date of manufacture for any civic I have owned. Don't know if that gos same for 80 GS RX7's

Mazda began building RX-7s in Feb of 78 and made several small design changes that first model year which ran through May / June of 79. Officially, 79 is the first model year.

June / July is when they switched to 1980 production, incorporating more changes like eletronic ignition (replacing points & condensers) and that chromed trim ring around the shift surround. Those are almost impossibile to find in good condition now a days. The dead pedal was standard in the GS model. Your car was one of the last built in 1980 as mid summer was the switch over from one model year to the next. The Y6 paint code isn't that common, Don't think I've ever saw Indy Maroon Metallic in real life.

Buying one of these was not the same as buying a domestic car. Their was no boxs to tick, to option out a car. The dealer could basically just get S's and GS's. Hiroshima decided how many of each was built and if it got a sunroof or not. (sunroofs were a north american market only option) Once on the lot, the dealer could upgrade steel wheels with waffles or add body molding and A/C (no cars came from Japan w/air). Basically, if you wanted certin things on a car, you waited for one that matched your desires to show up so that you could pay through the nose for it. Demand was greater than supply in those years.

1980 also saw the LS (Leather Sport) and 10th A/E (10th Anniversary Edition) model RX-7s brought out. These were GS cars spruced up with special trim and paint packages and produced in limited quantities. These two 1980 models are considered more desireable today due to their limited numbers.

I was your 1000th post good job banzai. One more question because you answered the rest what about the 6 speaker system that cam stock. Was that order GS or LS. I do have really nice Brown leather on the doors. I think the seats have been switched. Can my vin # tell me if it was originally LS or GS?

S and GS models definitely came stock with two speakers. Six speakers would be either a dealer upgrade or LS.

I can help you with the carb. I assume you're stripping the emissions? I have 2 early carbs here ready to go, a 1978 EPV Nikki and a 1980 w/dbl banjo bolts. Or I can do a nasty rebuild on what you have, but you'd need a bigger fuel pump...

I also have 2 emissions deleted intake manis, 1979, and a ported 1985. GL with the stuff I cant help you with, like the interior lol

My personal opinion is that a factory performance upgrade will always trump a cosmetic one. The SEs will valued for this in the future. You are comparing an FB to a SA however, two different animals. Like comparing a C1 Corvette to a C2 or C3. You'll have different people liking the different versions for their personal reasons.

Your car is a GS. Leather Sports came with an all brown interior. Brown carpets, brown leather seats, door pannels, leather wrapped steering wheel, leather wrapped shift ****, power mirrors, up graded stereos and b-pillar badges. They also came with gold painted waffles. No way to de-code your VIN to determine what model car you have. You need the window sticker.

Your shift **** is not a true leather covered one. Its a rubberized material molded to look stitched. Leather ***** came with an actual clear acrylic crystal shift pattern, not the metal plate like yours. Stock, the cars came with 2 front speakers only. The special models (79 Limiteds and I think the LSs / 10th A/Es) came with 2 additional rear speakers.
