okay so since finding a gas tank for 12a 79-80's at a reasonable price is impossible by all means what soever I've opted to find a cheap fuel cell...I started with racing, I want a minimum of 10 gallons, couldn't find one under 100(yes i know i have a small budget)

so now I'm on amazon and i found a gas tank for a boat for 50 bucks...if the fittings can fit on the gas lines...or is there something hugely different about boat tanks I don't know about.

I don't see how it would be a problem as long as its strapped down.

I'm not expert, but it would be hard to believe that a boat fuel cell could withstand the impact of an equivilently-sized car fuel cell.

Is a local salvage yard out of the question? sorry if that sounds like a stupid question, but an SA fuel tank probably isn't that hard to find at a junkyard. You'll probably be able to get it for less than 100 bucks, but it depends where you are, or if you know how to barter.

the local bone yard would be excellent if they didn't slash the tanks as soon as they get there...sometimes they crack the diff covers too....they're concerned about the earth and the water table and all that jazz

If you know enough to know about racing fuel cells, then get one and save the $100 some other way: Put up a clothesline and sell your dryer. Buy generic groceries. Shop on CL and at yard sales. Sell your Star Wars collectibles.
Fuel tank is too important too $%# around with a cheap option or a rusted out SA replacement. Get a good one!
+1 on the impact-worthiness of the boat fuel tank.

All fuel cells are different. Ones that are fine with the drag racer sanctioning bodies are not fine with the road race people.

The expense of even a cheap one goes up when you start to consider plumbing and mounting. Do you want 60-80lbs of explosive fluid just kind of hanging around in the back part of your car?

For a couple hundred(which you would probably spend on the cheap cell install by the time you're done) you can probably get your tank repaired/sealed. What is wrong with yours? There are a lot of options that you may be able to do yourself.

the last owner thought it was clogged and took it off the car and wasn't smart enough to leave it out of the rain then put on another one from a different car that was roped on, then he tried to rivet on the wrong breather valve, and used a Toyota pick up sending unit that doesn't fit and the inside of the tank has rust flakes everywhere and when I shake it out as soon as I put it down some more flakes fall loose.

Take it to a radiator shop and have it dipped. This will remove all the "flakes".

Then go to Eastwood.com and get the gas tank sealer kit.
