12a or 13b 6 port , FB RX7 NEED ADVICE

Hey my sweet old rx7 has been in the garage for a litle to long now my father blew the 12a that was in it the previous owner told me he rebuild the engine the engine plates are painted red so I believe something was done.. well my 12a is smoking like a chimney to the point is not drivable my father bought a 13b 6 port from a local mechanic and he's obsssed with this god damn 13b I argue with him everyday cause we're on a budget and the 13b has been sitting for like 5 years now with no librications or nothing I heard motors Go bad the seals crack idk how true that is or not but I know what the 12a is and know what I'm getting into we plan on putting the car on the steeeg this coming summer and he wants to swap the 13b I be trying to explain to him that it'll be expensive to do the swap then maybe even if the motor smokes we will be back at square one ill really like to pull the 12a give it a nice large streetport headers msd Weber intake and call it the day ill have around the ssme power n wont have to spend all the money on swap parts I really need advice guys I'm in NYC I've been thinking of t&r raving or ir performance for my rotary rebuild they both quoted me about $2000 for a basic rebuild no port so guys what you think is the best option is a fully stock fb rx7 with a 12a ...

Not too difficult to swap to a 13b, although with a new intake it will be a little more expensive than staying with the 12a. Sitting for even 5 years shouldn't hurt the 13b. Make sure it turns freely and throw a little MMO in the chambers. Push on the apex seals through the exhaust ports to make sure they are free and move. While turning, the engine should make a 'swoosh' sound. You can run the 13b while you re-build the 12a and go back to that later. All depends upon what you want to do. Expect to do some carb work/tuning.

Don't put MMO in there, it will ruin the oil seals. A little 30wt oil squirted into the plug holes and
turning it can be used to see if it has any hopes of compression.

If the 12A is smoking and its white and smells like coolant, then you will need to tear it down to
fix it. If its burning oil (greay, greasy black smoke) you can try lucas oil treatment or thicker oil to
see if it helps.

The 13B swap is not that hard. You will need to use the 12A mount slotted to get it mounted
but thats pretty easy, other than that its just like a 12A except for the mentioned carb/intake
option you choose.
